Carlisle host Boreham Wood at Brunton Park in what looks a tense and controlled semi-final. Both sides built their seasons on defensive structure, strong clean sheet records, and limiting chances. With so much on the line, caution and narrow margins are expected.

Rochdale face Scunthorpe at the Crown Oil Arena in a matchup that profiles very differently. Rochdale were outstanding at home all season and scored in every league match at the venue, while Scunthorpe carried one of the strongest away scoring records in the division. Their ability to contribute on the road gives this game a more open feel.

The contrast between the two ties is clear. One looks built on discipline and control, the other on attacking consistency and pressure from both sides.

Carlisle United vs Boreham Wood

Brunton Park will play host to one of the two National League Play off semi-final on Sunday lunchtime and it has all the makings of a tense knockout contest and under 2.5 goals stands out as the best bet.

A place at Wembley is on the line, so caution should be expected. These one-off semi-finals are often decided by narrow margins, and the season numbers point strongly toward a low-scoring game.

Carlisle finished third with 95 points, five ahead of fourth-placed Boreham Wood on 90, so there was little between the sides across 46 matches. Mark Hughes' men were solid rather than reckless, conceding only 51 goals all season. At Brunton Park they posted a strong W15-D5-L3 record, scoring 53 and allowing only 24. They also kept 10 home clean sheets, a 43% return.

Boreham Wood arrive in strong form after beating Forest Green 1-0 after extra time in the eliminator, but that demanding midweek tie could affect energy levels. Their away record of W10-D7-L6 was strong, built on defensive discipline, while nine away clean sheets, 39%, underlines how difficult they are to break down on the road.

Underlying numbers also suggest a controlled game. Carlisle averaged 1.28 non-penalty xG and 0.84 non-penalty xGA, with 4.98 shots on target for and only 3.24 against. Boreham Wood posted 1.46 non-penalty xG and 0.90 xGA, with 5.91 shots on target for and 3.63 against. Both teams rank well defensively, which matters more than attacking flair in knockout football.

Carlisle home both teams to score landed in only 48% of matches, while Boreham Wood away both teams to score was 61%, not high enough to justify an aggressive goals line in this spot.

With two organised sides, strong clean-sheet records, and the pressure of a winner-takes-all semi-final, under 2.5 goals looks the smart angle.

Rochdale vs Scunthorpe United

Rochdale welcome Scunthorpe United to the Crown Oil Arena on Sunday afternoon. This fixture looks the standout game for goals at both ends and both teams to score is the best bet.

Rochdale ended the regular season in dramatic fashion, conceding in the 13th minute of stoppage time against York after thinking they had won promotion moments earlier. Given that emotional finish, it will be interesting to see how they react. The positive for Dale is that they were still strong enough to push the champions all the way and finished second on 106 points.

At home, Rochdale were outstanding with an W18-D2-L3 record, scoring 48 goals and failing to score in none of their 23 league matches. That 100% home scoring rate is a major plus for this market. They also saw both teams to score land in 13 of those 23 home games, 57%.

Scunthorpe arrive with momentum after beating Southend 1-0 in the eliminator. They have also been a dangerous travelling side all season, posting an W11-D7-L5 away record with 40 goals scored. Most importantly, they failed to score in only two of 23 away games, meaning they scored in 91% of road fixtures. Their away both teams to score figure was 19 from 23, an outstanding 83%, the highest mark in the division.

Underlying numbers support both attacks contributing. Rochdale ranked second on xPTS with 91.35 and posted 1.67 non-penalty xG per game, while Scunthorpe recorded 68.17 xPTS and 1.30 non-penalty xG. Rochdale averaged 5.33 shots on target for at home profile level, while Scunthorpe managed 4.91 overall. In shots on target from inside the box, Rochdale posted 4.22 and Scunthorpe 3.30.

Scunthorpe kept only two away clean sheets all season, another key factor, while Rochdale’s recent last 10 games saw both teams to score land in 90%.

Rochdale should score in front of their own crowd, but Scunthorpe’s away scoring consistency is hard to ignore. Both teams to score looks the strongest angle.
