THE big kick-off is finally here and we start with a match between the two lowest-ranked teams in the tournament.

Saudi Arabia are down at 67th while hosts Russia have fallen below them to 70th in recent weeks after a rotten run of seven games without a win.

Uruguay and Egypt make up Group A and there are fears the Russians won't qualify for the last 16.

To have a chance they must beat the Saudis and while World Cup openers are often turgid this could be more entertaining as a draw will suit no one – as for both it will be deemed to be their easiest outing.

Russia don't have any star men and struggle to score goals but the Saudis are decent going forward – Asian top scorers in qualifying – and proved that by netting in a 2-1 friendly defeats to Italy and Germany.

I don't want to take Russia – who haven't won in eight at major finals – at a short price of 4-9 with William Hill.

Backing goals in openers isn't usually the way to go but Russia haven't kept a clean sheet in 10 so consider both to score at a big price of 6-4 with McBookie.

The Saudis are massive 10-1 at BlackType and if you fancy them not to lose back them +1 at 7-4 with McBookie and +2 at 8-15 with William Hill.

Uruguay are have to be supported at 10-11 with William Hill to win Group A and while Russia are no bigger than 9-20 at Marathonbet to qualify the value could be with Egypt at 13-8 with BetBright.

One of our team will preview every game and Voice of Value is on the opener so check out his tips.

Well done to all yesterday's winners and good luck with all your World Cup tips.

Will be keeping a track of my world cup bets starting with a 100point bank.

My first tip is in the world cup opening fixture tmrw afternoon, Russia v Saudia Arabia.

You have to go back 11 games and almost one year to the 17th June 2017 to find the last time Russia kept a clean sheet, and that was against New Zealand who are ranked 120 in the world.

Now Saudi obviously aren’t world beaters but they are ranked 67 in the world and have had recent success in finding the net against Greece, Italy and Germany. Knowing that Russia and Egypt are their best chance of securing any points I really fancy Saudi to score against the hosts tomorrow.

I watched the friendly against Germany last week and was impressed with how they pounced with pace on their rare counter attacks, although admittedly, the finishing was poor.

You can have BTTS at a very generous 6/4, but the 5/4 on offer for a solitary Saudi goal is good enough for me.

Maybe just a word of caution about Russias poor form…last 6 games have been at home to Turkey, Brazil, Argentina, France. Spain and away to Austria who just beat Germany. Quite a few teams in the World Cup that wouldn’t pick up a result against them. I’m avoiding today, although have interest as followed Mr F antepost write up of Saudi to be bottom of the group. Good luck all with a bet on ?

Yesterday’s Valur pick was less valiant and more valium and it cut deep given the strength of my optimism.

I’d ideally want to be picking some opening day World Cup bets but I just don’t fancy anything from the hosts game…not worth betting on it for bettings sake so I’m sticking to more familiar territory…

FH VS. VÍKINGUR REYKJAVÍK (2015 KO):

Both sides have had a similarly paced start with FH edging it to a 5th placed placed standing on 13 points as opposed to Vikingur’s 9 points which seea them them sitting in 8th place.

But, it’s the hosts penchant for conceding a goal that I’m drawing on here – it’s a feat they have achieved in each of the last 6 Urvalsdeild games and has become a huge standout over the last 12 months.

They’ll be up against a Vikingur side who hsve scored in each of their last 4 games and in 100% of the last 5 H2H’s between the two; the most recent of these being last season’s games which resulted in scorelines of 2-4 and 2-2.

    Two selections here:

    BTTS…5/6
    (Bet365)
    ????

    BTTS & OVER 2.5 MGS…11/8 (Bet365)
    ?

    ****************************

Of the 4 Urvalsdeild games, I suspect 2 have decent potential for both sides to net; FH’s I’ve reasoned out above but I reckon form reversal between Fjolnir and Grindavik may just see a change to the usual goal traffic betwen the two!

Doubled up, they offer a decent price:

    FH VS. VÍKINGUR REYKJAVÍK
    FJÖLNIR VS. GRINDAVÍK

    BTTS DOUBLE…2/1
    (Bet 365)
    ??

    Best of luck ?

Tough start for Wolves in the premier league next season,Liverpool,Man City,Man Utd all given favourable fixtures for the first 6 games.

    • richb20806 6 years ago

I’m not too dismayed myself. We’ve gotta play everyone.
Everton to start so let’s just see. If our transfer rumours pan out then we could be going into prem life with quite a strong team.

    • maccathered 6 years ago

Unless your paying 30 or 40 million per player then your not entering the premier league as strong as you think, your ok if you have rich owners who are willing to spend, but remember you can’t spend more than your teams income so it really does make it difficult for any new premier league team.

    • maccathered 6 years ago

Also the first season for any new premier league team should always be the biggest spending period in the history of the club no matter who it is because that will no doubt be the biggest earning period for small clubs unless retaining prem league status.

    • aarron19888 6 years ago

@maccathered no offence your sounding a little elitist, let the guy have his comments on his team, and encourage any new teams to challenge should surely be the message? (coming from a Scottish person here, but still)

    • aarron19888 6 years ago

and without a doubt there is a good buzz around wolves, it is pretty exciting to read up on who they could bring, if they get andre silva for example – along with jiminez who I am sure has been on the radar of loads of prem clubs with loads of cash – then people would applaud them, and they would fear them a bit deffo, look at how nicely cenk tosun is coming along, he was very rusty to begin with and now he is picking up a bit, and i’ll bet he has a great season next season under a new manager.

bottom line the portugal effect is happening like, and having ronaldo’s agent working with that club cloesely next season is looking brilliant, and has already been proven last season.

    • maccathered 6 years ago

Sounding Elitest really, what i said is true, the new clubs coming into the premier league need to spend big to compete,if they don’t spend there is no point, for example look at hull city they made millions gaining entry to the premier league but invested nothing, hence they duly got relegated and deservedly so.Investment is key to premier league survival, thats my point,Wolves played some great football last season can they play that way in the premier league and get away with it we will see,i wish all them all the best of course.

    • Mr Fixit 6 years ago

Only the richest can compete for the big prizes – for the rest it’s all about survival.
Any team coming up will be happy to stay up then build the way Burnley and Bournemouth have.

    • Mr Fixit 6 years ago

At the end of the day there are 20 paces to fill in the Premier League so not everyone can compete at the top like Liverpool.
There will never be another Leicester in England (that’s why they were 5000-1) because every year the TV money gets bigger and bigger.

    • maccathered 6 years ago

It’s how clubs invest mrf Liverpool’s budget per player was 10 million and that was not so long back, teams need to spend the money they receive when they are promoted, the problem is with a lot of the clubs is they don’t reinvest the prize money, they share it with stakeholders.

    • Mr Fixit 6 years ago

Promoted clubs have to be careful – if they spend too much and go down they’ll be in trouble.
Also investors won’t invest if they’re not going to get a return.
      There are very few benefactors.

    • michu in de gea ba 6 years ago

That’s what they said before Leicester won. Which is why they were 5,000/1

    • maccathered 6 years ago

No club are in trouble if they go down, thats why the parachute payments were introduced.

    • Mr Fixit 6 years ago

They are if they’re still down when parachute payments run out – been plenty of examples of that.

    • aarron19888 6 years ago

      – exactly, there is nothing to say that either of stoke/swansea/west brom are good enough to beat all of the talented teams in the championship, look at blackburn for example they are going to push probably, and could do really well, the hungrier team will always beat the complacent cash driven teams.

I completely agree with the parachute comment Mr fix it.

The big day has finally arrived as hosts Russia gets the 2018 World Cup underway against Saudi Arabia at 1700 CET from the Luzhniki stadium in Moscow.

Whilst the match doesn’t appear to be the most glamorous of opening day numbers, we should see a competitive fixture despite the Saudis underdog status.

16:00 Russia vs Saudi Arabia – Prediction 1.1

    Best Bets

    BTTS @13-/8 – 2 stars
    Saudi Arabia plus 2 @8/13 – 3.5 stars
    Draw @14/5 – 1.5 stars

Our first game of the tournament comes from Moscow and all the pressure is on the hosts who will surely need to get off to a winning start when they take on a Saudi side that really should not be under-estimated in this fixture.

The Russians have only won 6 of their last 26 matches whilst they have failed to record a win in 2018 and I don’t expect them to win this one and certainly not by more than 1 goal against a side that have looked well-organised and threatening in recent friendly performances against Germany and Italy.

Given the hosts poor form, I can’t back the home win at just 4/9 odds on. Instead, I’ll take the Saudis plus 2 @8/13 whilst BTTS is huge @6/4 and has to have a chance with both sides probably aware that 3 points will be necessary to give themselves any real chance of advancing to the round of 16.

I don’t expect a goalfest but both could hit the net with Russia only keeping 1 clean sheet in their last 12 home matches.

I’m going for a 1.1 draw with the hosts struggling to make the opening day impression they would have expected when this draw was made back in December with BTTS and the Saudis plus 1 my best selections here.

Friday and Saturday look like cracking days as the competition really gets into full swing and I will do my best to cover all those matches in as much detail as possible over the weekend.

I will also be putting on my antepost accas during the course of the next 3 hours and will post images of these to twitter should anyone wish to follow.

Here though are my favourite selection, taken from my previews.

    To Win the Group

France to win the group @2/7 – 4 stars
Brazil to win the group @2/7 – 4 stars
Germany to win the group @1/3 – 3.5 stars
Uruguay to win the group @4/6 – 3.5 stars
Argentina to win the group @8/13 – 3 stars
Colombia to win group @11/8 – 2 stars

    To Qualify for last 16

    Colombia to qualify @4/11 – 4 stars
Spain and Portugal to qualify @2/5 – 4 stars
France and Denmark to qualify @10/11 – 3 stars
Germany and Sweden to qualify @6/4 – 2.5 stars
Argentina and Iceland to qualify @ 9/2 – 1 star
Uruguay and Egypt to qualify @7/2 – 1.5 stars

    Russia vs Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia as others have said have a reasonable amount of attacking talent. But you’re not telling me that the hosts will not score a goal in their opening game are you?

Seeing as that’s the case, BTTS seems a no-brainer :-)

    Afternoon gents

Looking forward to this world cup – glad its finally here (plus I’m off all week next week )

There is an unbelievable amount of markets for this world cup but try to go too daft. could have easily posted 12 or so ante post selections but better focusing on 3 or 4 main bets

I’ve left it late for the opening match but have reached a decision on what i believe to be really good value

Russia v Saudi Arabia KO 4pm

By now we will have heard and read the views of many people regarding the opening game and I’m with the majority that Russia look extremely vulnerable at 4/9 and its a bit of a disservice to Saudi Arabia who are a decent side especially going forward.

The Russians have dropped from the top 10 to 70 in the rankings and is easy to see why. They aren’t aided by the fact they haven’t played any competitive games in a long time and its even a struggle to be able to name any of their players . Defensively they look weak and although they have played quite a few decent sides recently , 10 games without a clean sheet is a worry.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Russia grind out a narrow win but I think there is real value on taking Saudi to score, especially given they managed to do just that against Germany and Italy dung their preparation for this

    Hello. It’s time :-)

Posted these fun accas elsewhere a week or so ago. I have no idea what odds are now but guess they won’t have changed much.

    O 2.5mg and BTTS pays 526/1

    France v Peru
    Japan v Poland
    Poland v Columbia
    France v Australia
    South Korea v Germany
    Uruguay v Saudi Arabia

Again O2.5mg and btts pays 303/1. A couple of different games.

    France v Peru
    Denmark v France
    Poland v Columbia
    Uruguay v Russia
    Belgium v Tunisia
    South Korea v Germany

    O2,5mg 10 fold pays 1000/1

    Poland v Japan
    Poland v Columbia
    France v Australia
    France v Peru
    Uruguay v Saudi
    Uruguay v Russia
    Portugal v Spain
    Serbia v Brazil
    Peru v Australia
    Belgium v Tunisia

I had a great return last WC backing 2nd half highest scoring during group stages so will be level stakes on each game again this year then half stakes on an acca of all games daily. Odds for the singles always around evens. 11/10 for today’s match.

    Have a great tournament all.

Good luck everyone with your World Cup bets.

One bet I’ve been doing is the Group Forecast 1st and 2nd 8fold accas.

Small bets of 0.50 to £1.00 max for me.

If one comes anywhere close could be good cash out opportunities.
Potential payouts between £35k and £600k.

Worth a go (though some groups look easier to call then others) and of course you never can tell whether something akin to the last World Cup may occur when Spain went home early and obliterated many an acca.

Well this Robbie Williams world cup opening concert isn’t very Russian is it we could have staged it at Wembley for less money

I ain’t switching on till 3.59pm. Can’t stand opening ceremonies.

    • buzzer 6 years ago

you didn’t miss much mrf it was only on for 10 minutes Robbie sang three songs and some Russian hussy came in flying on a mechanical bird…. putins speech was welcomed though

First game first win. Not sure how but hey ho ? Saudi either took a bung or as bad a team as I’ve seen in a WC finals. Russia ruthless though ?

On the face of it,Friday looks to be the best opportunity to win some early cash for the days ahead.Going for an obvious but well priced treble of,
Uruguay to beat a poor looking Eygypt.
Morocco to beat a less talented Iranian outfit
and playing it safe with Spain DNB against Portugal
Treble pays 5.0 ish or 3.5 if Spain is a push.
    Can it be that easy?

  49. radu 6 years ago

5 goals in the first game is absolutely wonderful , my bet – over 125 goals in group stages – smiles, tomorrow games – Spain will be in command with old World Class Former Real Madrid Defender – Hiero , usually former defenders likes to deploy an attacking style of play – normally we should see goals
Uruguay with Godin , Suarez & Cavani – will have no problem to win against a team with or without Salah , – Uruguay should win to nil
    Morocco ….

Good morning everybody, bet builder bet for today’s match,
    Russia to win
    Over 1 Russian goal
    Over 5 Russian corners
    2/1 with bet365.
Feel the Russians will need to come out the blocks fast today, this I think will
be their only chance of a win in this group, then try to hold out for draws against
the two better teams in group.

Good Luck with all bets today!

Winner!! Didn’t see much of game as working, but from what I did see Saudi Arabia were poor, didn’t think Russia were very good either, very slow going forward, poor distribution. Can’t see them posting Uruguay and Egypt much problems IMO
