Top Football Tips

I WAS a bit scared of the EFL Cup games but in the end my main line was torn to pieces by Lyon.

The French flops were mauled by Montpellier to down the double I had with both to score at Red Star v Young Boys.

I covered the stake on my goals treble when two out of three were over 2.5 goals with Norwich reserves unable to break down Crawley in a 1-0 defeat.

Well done to all the winners and it was good to see a decent number on a tough card.

It's more of the same on Wednesday with three more Champions League play-offs – Ajax v APOEL, Bruges v LASK and Slavia Prague v Sluj.

Ajax drew 0-0 in Cyprus while Bruges and Slavia won 1-0 away so all three home sides should progress.

There are seven EFL Cup ties and remember like last night all of the favourites will make sweeping changes. Games include Bournemouth v Forest Green, Burnley v Sunderland, Lincoln v Everton and Newcastle v Leicester and I've picked out goals trebles from the Europa League tomorrow and EFL Cup tonight.

Start in the EL with Dudelange v Ararat with the Luxembourg side trailing 2-1 from the first leg. Dudelange have netted seven goals in their last three home games while both sides have saw btts land in five of their last six matches.

Next take Riga v Copenhagen with the Latvians trying to fight back from 3-1 down. All five of Riga's games have brought up btts and while they'll go for it here the Danes are the better side and should at least grab an away goal.

Complete the treble with Wolves v Torino. It was 3-2 to the English side in Italy so Torino know they have to score at least to have any chance of qualifying. Should be an open game which should lead to goals at either end.

I was one goal short in the EFL Cup last night and almost at random have picked another over 2.5 goals treble.

The end for Bury is complete.134 years of history gone, while so called “top world class players” earn 500K A WEEK…..something wrong somewhere

    • chelseagirl 5 years ago

Aye its called TV totally wasting the game and BT is just going the same way as Sky banging their prices up.Dont get me wrong a lot of footy for your cash.

Easy to sort – don’t subscribe. Go to a game instead of paying TV companies.

    • maccathered 5 years ago

Your moaning about players on 500,000 a week, why shouldn’t they earn that, the big clubs are raking it in and that’s down to the players, without the players there is no money to be made, let’s put it this way trophies make clubs millions and it’s all down to the players, marketing etc etc all down to the players,so these clubs have to keep the players happy and that’s the top and bottom of it.

    • Mr Fixit 5 years ago

I get what you’re saying but it’s an obscene amount of money.
No one needs that much so a wage cap across Europe would be a great idea.

Both side at home here in very winnable cup ties. Guangzhou are in fine goalscoring form at the moment averaging 2.8 goals a game over their last 10 matches. As I’ve said numerous times before home advantage is very important in the AFC so they will be looking to score the goals required to take a decent first leg lead to japan.
Not much in the way to go of in form for Brisbane other than they went to Sydney (a top oz side) in the last round and progressed with a comfortable 2-0 win. The signing of Roy o Donovan from the jets will provide them with plenty of goals this season as will fellow Irishman jay o Shea (regulars will remember hullshaker taking him as a regular goal scorer for bury). I can see the roar taking a couple off the mariners this morning to progress.

My Forest/Derby BTTS was a dodo last night. To be fair to Forest, they blitzed us 3 nil at a canter, could of been more. Derby never had a shot on target. 10 changes for Derby against 8 for Forest would suggest the game would of been more open. I’m also led to believe the boss had little to no understanding of the importance of a result against our rivals.
He only had to look at the 3500 Derby fans that filled the away end at the City ground. But as he put it, we face them twice more but in the league. I get it, we have to manage a squad and bring in some of the youth, but doing it in such a game was a stupid move. Had we played any other team bar Leeds and put the same squad out, the fans would of accepted this squad rotation/experiment.
I feel so sorry for professional footballers these days, I mean most of them earn more in a week than most normal people do in a year, so training for and playing just 1 game in a week is enough pressure. Their poor bodies must be creaking at the seams over the prospect of playing twice in a week.
Between 1994 and 1997, I was stationed in the 2nd hottest part of Cyprus, and during high-summer, I did a physically demanding job – the majority of it outside ( temps between 28 and 33 celcius – it often went higher and we’d still work in it ), I ref’d 4 or 5 games a week 2pm kick-offs usually and did a minimum of 2 dj gigs a week – all on £14k a year.
If somebody paid me £20k a week to show up 3 or 4 times a week for a few hrs of average intensity training and 1 or 2 games a week, a 25 year old me would of given way more value to the club and fans paying the wages.
They don’t know how good they have it.

On a more positive note. Day 6 of the overs 0.5’s tmg’s.

Yesterday, Both games with staggered kick off times gave a goal near half time and a nice little boost to your pot. Sometimes the goal doesn’t come from where you expect it to, but that is the beauty of it. This challenge isn’t for everybody, and anybody can pick out a game with a goal in it 9/10 times. This week, we’ve had a few games where the goal has come too early, but we’ve moved on to our next game. Sticking to the script and keeping discipline is key to this. For me, it is day 6 of betting, but the challenge has been going now 7 or 8 days? If games do not look juicy enough, or you just need a brain break from the stat checking, then stop for the day and commence when you’ve recharged.
I don’t usually like cup games for this challenge, but yesterday, I was just convinced that the Leeds game would do the biz. Nobody would of guessed that they’d be 2 nil down at home – but they did get 2 late goals, so that sailed in. ( I didn’t see the end result ).
Today is a similar day, with little else on top of domestic cups everywhere, I am looking again to France Ligue 1 with the Lille game.
Last year, they had rather a good season, and although they’ve sold a lot of players, they’re still scoring. Their opposition is Saint Etienne. They away team have a decent away record, so this game could be tight but I do like the SP of 1/16.

18:00hrs Lille/St Etienne @ 1/16. usual rules, ride it for 2/3/4 price rises and strike. Don’t chase a 2nd goal if the first comes in early.
If this lands, we may be forced to look further at an odd cup game. The majority of which kick off at 19:45hrs.

Good luck guys. As soon as the outcome of this first is determined, I’ll post news of a 2nd pick if the first is successful.

I’m on overs in the lille/st etienne Game nathan i reckon they’ll be goals mate, I’m hoping anyway 👍

    • nathanufton 5 years ago

Lille goal on 37 minutes. Always a bonus when a goal late in the first half delivers the bet + the boost from holding back to get an odds boost. I’m having a spot of dinner and I’ll post up which game I’ll pick next. It will either be a 19:45 or 20:00 hrs kick off. I’m swaying towards another EFL cup tie and might have a sniff around this thread for pointers.

      Overs 0.5 tmg’s Day 6 – bet 2.

      Newcastle/Leicester. SP @ 1/16

Stats suggests this could be tight and it’s about the best of a bad bunch. I’m not convinced with a lot of the matches going off in the EFL tonight and the champions league qualifiers, most of which are priced very low. As this tie will be settled after 90 mins + penalties if needs be and I doubt that either team would really care about dropping out of the cup, they both have Premiership aspirations above a league cup run. Usual rules, hold back for 2/3/4 price rises and strike your bet. Good luck folks.

    • nathanufton 5 years ago

And a Leicester goal on 34 mins. I took them @ 1/10, so 3 small price rises. Always nice to see it drop before ht. As some will of figured, I’m not exactly bulldozing my way through to big numbers, for me it is more about ” can I pick a few winners and move onto the next day “. I’d far rather play the safety game, than the cricket score in a week. I’m up to £27 now and time to bank a £5.
I’ll be back on tomorrow for day 7. Each day we’ve only been scraping the surface with odd goals here and there yet our pot is realistically up 170% ( inclusive of the £5 I’ve banked ).
Good luck everybody tonight. I’ll catch you for more fun tomorrow.

Really sad. Did you see the message from Clydebank on the Beeb?
We had a full season with no club but first game back at the bottom rung of the juniors (our equivalent of non-league really) we had a bigger crowd than when we beat St Johnstone to win promotion to the Premier League.
Three promotions to reach the top flight and several cup wins on the way.
Everyone needs to pull together to get a fans-owned club ready for whatever level of the pyramid you have to enter next season.
I know how you feel though – I tried to watch other teams that season but never made it to a single game. Always turned back because I had no feeling for anyone else.

    • richb20806 5 years ago

Awful news. From a football fan my heart goes out to all Bury supporters. Proper old club and lots of history. Shouldn’t have happened and I can remember only too well back in the 80s when my beloved wolves were 4 minutes from going out of business.

    • HullShaker 5 years ago

Cheers Micky, Rich and great words Mr F – plenty worse things happening in the world but when a football club has been a massive part of your life (36 years for me since my first game aged 6), it’s a big hit to take.

Easy to be bitter about it but it won’t achieve anything now the fight has been fought – it’s all about swallowing 134 years of pride, moving forward and starting again at a (much) lower level.

Not often I’d say it but 🤞 to any Wanderers fans that your deal gets over the line – looking positive now.

    • nathanufton 5 years ago

hey Hullshaker, I really feel for you losing your club, mismanagement sucks. Similar happened to Derby under the Maxwell in the 80’s. I know it’s probably not gonna ease the pain, but somebody not too far in the future will snap up your club, it might have a tweak of its name and you’ll have to start right at the bottom, but it will be a clean slate. If you start right at the bottom, you can only ever move forwards in an upward direction.
You’ll always be a Bury fan, keep hold of your footie shirt, sink a few ales to drown your sorrows and bide your time. Some local businessman will buy it and run it properly. You only have to look at Rangers and Afc Wimbledon to see that good things in football can and do often happen.

On a cautionary note about my overs 0.5’s challenge. The banana skin games. Well I use a number of things to gauge whether to ” Red Flag ” a game. Local derby’s, teams that have nothing to play for, certain leagues, reverse fixtures on a 2 leg tie that has already seen a team almost over the line before a ball is kicked in the 2nd game, C*&t lists, recent form including too many 0-0’s or big numbers of 1 nils. I’d need to go through my list but you get the picture.
Well tonight after the game in France delivered the goal, for the 2nd time in 2 days, I’d opted for looking at a goal in a league cup game. For many good reasons, I try to avoid them but on a card like yesterday and today, it’s almost impossible.
So yesterday, I had Leeds. It delivered.
Tonight was a toss up between 2 matches both in the EFL. I stuck to what I know ( my rules on red flags ), I opted for the Newcastle/Leicester game. It delivered. My other option was Rotherham/Sheff Wed. I’m so glad I never posted up that one. Its a local Yorkshire derby and I red flagged the game and chalked it off – hence I never posted it being on my radar ( my shortlist ).
Not betting on every game and keeping an eye out on the ones you chalked off as duds can be quite enlightening, sometimes your gut pays off, sometimes it doesn’t. I guess that’s betting.
The Rotherham/Sheff Wed game delivered a goal at the end of the 96th minute with only 5 minutes of added time.
I think I’ll call that a near miss.

Very disappointing after the team news. Leicester really should be winning that. Bet lost 👎🏻
