Mr Fixit’s Top Tips: Kick off 2018 by winning £50

WELL that's another year out of the way and hopefully we're all a year wiser as well as older.

For football fans the first half of 2017 was more profitable as the second half but as usual there are loads of winners and losers – backing the right ones is what makes it difficult.

I'd like to wish everyone a Happy New Year when it comes and thank all the contributors for their tips and comments.

Happy to hear any recommendations and also what's your New Year betting resolution. I have two – fewer bets on a Saturday (until results turn around) and more no-bet days. Sometimes I feel I have to put up tips because that's what people come here for but in reality if there's nothing I'm totally convinced about I should leave it alone.

For example in normal circumstances I wouldn't have put up Sunday's bets but I made an attempt to wipe out December's small losses.

Hopefully January will be a winning month and we start with a big card in England. I've posted a Premier League preview soon and have added some tips.

Leicester at home to Huddersfield and Everton not to lose at home to Man United are two of the best I like in the top flight.

On-form Derby look good shouts at home to off-form Sheffield Utd in the Championship and maybe it's the Nathan influence but I've decided to make them the Super Single.

They are up second after five wins out of six and haven't conceded in that spell. Nathan was concerned about the trip to Ipswich on Saturday but boss Gary Rowett made five changes to freshen things up and they won more convincingly than the 2-1 score suggests.

The Blades' crashed at home to Bolton at the weekend and that's one win in eight. Take Derby at 5-4 with McBookie and bet365.

I also like Leeds against managerless Nottingham Forest who sacked Mark Warburton after one point out of 12. Leeds' only loss in six came at Birmingham at the weekend and they should bounce back against a side with one win in seven. Saturday's home defeat to Sunderland was the final straw for the board.

In League One – and HullShaker may confirm this – Scunthorpe look best bets at just under evens at home to basement boys Bury who are five points adrift at the foot after losing three in a row without scoring.

One thing to remember is it's the time of year when you get strange results with games coming thick and fast so keep stakes low.
