Top Football Tips

IT was a tricky night in the Champions League and while I called the Celtic game correctly my treble was let down by Basel.

I tipped draw and both to score at Cluj v Celtic and took Celtic to score on a treble with the Swiss and Slovan Bratislava.

However, we knew something was wrong when Basel started to be shunned by punters and going out to evens. All I could see was transfer news linking their star striker with a move to West Ham and the market was spot on as LASK notched a 2-1 win.

Well done if you shied away from Basel and well done to all the winners including Greg with his goals Nap and HullShaker with his over 9.5 goals shout on Glentoran woman.

I've posted my thoughts on the Rangers and Aberdeen matches here.

Fancy goals in both of those games and taking the Rangers on a both to score treble with Brondby v Braga and AEK Larnaca v Gent.

Looked at adding a moneyback fivefold featuring Torino, Espanyol, Dudelange, Malmo and PSV but it's a little short at 22-5 with Betway.

However, I'm putting up an early Super Single for Friday and it's Dundee United draw no bet at Partick Thistle. United should win this but I'm keeping the draw on side in case Thistle improve. Will add thoughts on this match and the Liverpool v Norwich Premier League opener later.

Great to see my old favourites LASK upsetting the form book last night and dumping Basel. I think bookies read too much into Basel result in the previous round against an undercooked PSV and didn’t pay LASK the respect they deserve, especially since the Swiss are on the slide at the moment and LASK are on an upwards trajectory. I strongly fancy them to finish the job at home, even Salzburg don’t get it easy their and they are much much better than Basel.

What respect do LASK deserve???they are pretty new to this game, where as Basel have been regular champions league contenders for some years.

    • Mr Fixit 5 years ago

For me LASK are decent but Basel looked the better and more experienced team and bookies would agree it was a shock result. I don’t how much Basel were hit by losing Ajeti to West Ham on the eve of the game.

    • sean567 5 years ago

Right now the standard of the top teams in Austria is better than the Swiss league macca, but bookies priced this match imo on exactly what you pointed out- history. (Plus the previous round result.) Both of which have had no bearing on this game. Get your cash on LASK to qualify on Tuesday 👍🏻

    Mr F,
More grease to your elbows. you help us buy money.
Last week you highlighted rangers hibernian an celtic to win at the weekend. anything similar this weekend for the early birds?
thinking of COVE RANGERS to win. your thoughts would be appreciated

    • Mr Fixit 5 years ago

I’ll have a Super Single shortlist posted later. Cove are too short to be on it and at around 4-6 they won’t be on any of my lines.
Albion Rovers have improved from last season and the pitch won’t be great so it’s a tough test for Cove.
I’d rather bet Megginson to score when the price is available.
Elsewhere Celtic, Rangers and Aberdeen looks a decent treble but of course all are involved in Europe and had away games so I’d be more cautious this weekend.

Anyone got any bets on any transfers for today 🧐

    • maccathered 5 years ago

Mandzukic to Man Utd looks a solid bet, they have sold Lukaku and it would be a disaster if they don’t replace him,Dybala doesn’t want to go as he want’s Champions League football and he doesn’t like the clause if United don’t make Champions League then they get 25% deducted from their weekly wage (which for a suppoedly big club is insane.Mandzukic to Man Utd at 3/4 skybet.

    • Mr Fixit 5 years ago

Looks like Dybala’s on his way to Spurs.

    • maccathered 5 years ago

Looking that way mr f,he will get champions league football at Spurs so it’s very likely.Erikson will move on Athletico Madrid the favourites to sign him.

    • johnston17 5 years ago

      Dybala isn’t moving anywhere!!

    • alex_mufc83 5 years ago

Yep don’t think Dybala is going anywhere, and I’m glad United haven’t caved in to his wage demands, given recent history it is the wise thing to do.

If we get Madzukic I’ll be very happy, he’s one of the best finishers in the World. We’ve got Slabhead which is a big step in the right direction, would really like Bruno Fernandes but not looking like it’s going to happen.

    • maccathered 5 years ago

Thats only just been reported mate.Tge reports earlier when we posted was that Spurs had agreed to sign him.

    • alex_mufc83 5 years ago

      *Mandzukic

    • maccathered 5 years ago

Mandzukic is ok but his age is 33 years old,ok for the short term maybe a season but thats still no good as not looking at the long term.No chance of fernandes.

    • alex_mufc83 5 years ago

yeah just a short term fix, but still a much-needed improvement to the squad.

Not much jumping out at me today but that has given me a chance to look further ahead to the weekend and what should hopefully be a straightforward treble. Only slight concern would be Celtic playing Motherwell three days after travelling to Romania.

Ole to be the 1st sacking of the season. This has been a terrible window for the reds. Nearly the same pack of crap as last yr apart from big harry at the back and he isnt worth 80 mill. Think ole is 6/1 to be sacked 1st.

    • alex_mufc83 5 years ago

he won’t be sacked this season, whilst United are struggling, it’s no way near as bad as some people like to make out.

  16. alex. walker 5 years ago

Why u say that. If he starts the season like he finnished last season its ta ra ole. You are a club that needs champions league and if your not in the hunt by say October he will be replaced. You got rid of jose quick enough you will do the same to ole. Rooney will be your manager inside 2yrs.

    • alex_mufc83 5 years ago

you’re entitled to your opinion, but I disagree. Jose lost the dressing room which is what sealed his fate. rooney as Utd manager no chance.

Just looking at the early prices for Penalties for the EPL . They are absolutely shocking Some of them are as low as 13/8 in the City . and Liverpool games– the highest price is 21/10. in the Burnley match . I know it`s the first games featuring VAR , bet even so these are terrible odds .

    • maccathered 5 years ago

    Bye Bye Bury ??

The English Football League (EFL) has given League One side Bury until Aug. 23 to meet all outstanding financial requirements or risk having its membership withdrawn, the league body said on Thursday.
Bury, who had their first two league fixtures against Milton Keynes Dons and Accrington Stanley suspended, will now not be allowed to play their League Cup game at Championship (second-tier) side Sheffield Wednesday on Aug. 13 either.

The club, who were served a notice of withdrawal of membership last month, had a Wednesday deadline to provide a viable plan to settle their debts but the EFL said the additional information provided by the club lacked clarity.

    • HullShaker 5 years ago

It’s s mess alright Buzzer but not new news – this has been building momentum for a long time.

I’ve steered clear of talking about it on here as it’s way more complex than anything you will read about in the mainstream press.

Sad times indeed and a proud club brought to it’s knees not by overspending (don’t believe the hype) but by a combination of fans turning their interests 7 miles South for decades and, most recently, horrendous financial duplicity.

The former I can understand and every fan wants success but the latter is simply unforgivable – the good will out in time but alas, maybe too late to save 125 years of football history.

    • Mr Fixit 5 years ago

I hope you survive – even if it’s non league. At least you can start again down there.

    • buzzer 5 years ago

Very sad to see it happen to a lower league team where the main fan base have been coming since boys no doubt, the cases of poor ownership league one and two seems to be becoming an epidemic … but I guess not many people will care now that the money spinning circus show that is the premier league rolls in to town at about 8pm at Anfield

    • Mr Fixit 5 years ago

I don’t who is to blame for Bury’s woes but it’s a real shame.
Got to feel for HullShaker and being a Clydebank fan I know how it feels when your team goes under.

    • HullShaker 5 years ago

Cheers Mr F/Buzzer at the moment the spotlight is on Bury but we are far from on our own – it’s my belief that within the next decade, the footballing pyramid will cease to function as it currently does.

The vast majority of ‘lower league’ clubs will need to redefine who they are and how they operate as the current model isn’t fit for purpose with modern day finances and interest so top-heavily biased towards the EPL.

We will have a Super League or equivalent which will widen the gulf further and make it nigh on impossible for all but the ‘biggest’ lower teams to operate as they currently are.

The new owner blames previous owners for the massive debt, if so why take the club on in that case.
The efl have demanded 1.6 million towards the debt, as it stands the owner has shown no proof that this payment is possible, hence the suspension.
The owner also blames the efl for not helping the club by giving them more Time to produce a solid financial plan, if funds were going to be paid off a plan would surely have been submitted by the current deadline.
Sadly only way forward barring a fairy godmother seems to to Afc bury (Phoenix) club.
Maybe this is best , clear debts, clear owners out, maybe become a fan funded (supporters trust club like wrexham, Wimbledon etc.
