After just 59 days Wigan called a halt to Kolo Toure's reign as gaffer last week with the club propping up the Championship table.
His replacement is the Latics' 2014 FA Cup winning striker Shaun Maloney who begins his tenure at Blackburn Rovers in tonight's north-west derby.
Maloney served his managerial apprenticeship under Roberto Martinez with the Belgian national team before a far from stellar first gig in the hot seat as manager of Hibernian. He lasted just 19 games in charge at Easter Road after just six wins and faces a battle to prevent Wigan dropping in to League One.
But it's not beyond them. A win tonight would move them up two places and just one point behind Cardiff with a game in hand. However, Wigan failed to win any of the nine games that Toure was in charge so the Scotsman will need to hit the ground running.
Tonight's hosts are aiming to return to the play-off places with a win at Ewood Park.
Rovers were left frustrated in their attempts to add to the squad at the end of the transfer window. The FA blocked moves for midfielders Lewis O'Brien and Ethan Brierley due to the late submission of paperwork so Jon Dahl Tomasson will need to go with what he has unless the club's heirarchy can have that decision overturned.
Blackburn lost the earlier meeting between the sides, going down 1-0 in an uninspiring encounter in October and have won just one of the last eight meetings. But their home form has been pretty solid this season, with nine wins from 13.
The only doubt over getting stuck in to a home win is whether the new manager will get a response out of his Wigan side. If we can look beyond that then the even money on Blackburn to claim the three points looks worth a punt.

“The Premier League – which opened its investigation in March 2019 – has referred the alleged offences to an independent Commission” – Sky Sports (this morning).
Kf they have been charged, what happens now is they answer the charges either guilty or not guilty, they have been under investigation for years and obviously they have enough evidence. They were given a two year ban from the Champions league a while back but they got that overturned and payed a hefty fine instead.
It’s the same thing kf if you go on the Premier league website the list of charges are on it.
To be fair mate, it’s semantics. The ‘charges’ or indeed the ‘allegations’ still need to be proven. So up until then, it’s a pretty moot point…

As bad as we are playing plug i don’t think we’ll ever reach the levels that Man Utd have reached over the last 5 years, i mean at least Liverpool do have an excuse, but i’m sure when Diaz, Jota, Firminho, Van Djik.and Konate all return then we’ll see some sort of improvement.
