Newell's Old Boys v Boca Juniors, Wednesday, 11.30pm

NEWELL'S OLD BOYS held Boca to a scoreless draw in the first leg of this Copa Libertadores quarter-final to hold the advantage going into tonight's clash.

Boca are one of the powerhouses of Argentina and indeed South American football and were beaten finalists last season, going down in a fierce battle with Corinthians.

This season has been a disaster on a league front with Boca currently 19th from 20 teams with 2 wins, 7 draws and 6 defeats.

They are safe from relegation (for now) under the country's complex three-season aggregates ruling.

But in Copa Libertadores they have fared better with 4 wins, 2 draws and 3 defeats so far. They had a relatively straightforward group but struggled to dominate Nacional, Toluca and Barcelona, scraping though by 1 point.

In the last 16 they were drawn against last year’s winners Corinthians again and no one outside of Buenos Aires predicted a Boca victory.

However, La Bombonera was rocking and they prevailed at home 1-0. In Brazil they were then expected to capitulate but with a game plan and a solid performance they matched Corinthians. A goal from returning hero Juan Riquelme from about 40 yards summed up the performance and Boca won through.

Legendary coach Carlos Bianchi is back for a third spell and the belief in the club and fans is so high they could do it, even without a side anywhere near what they are used to.

A home win was vital for Boca and they ultimately lacked the quality to nick a low-scoring victory. Despite the red-hot atmosphere and the fans playing their part they could not break down the defence of Newell’s.

The tables will be turned now in Rosario and the home side will be big favourites to qualify. Newell’s have been several levels above all domestic opponents this season and with Boca in such poor form generally but especially away from home I see a home win here.

Newell’s did beat Boca 4-0 last week but that result should have little bearing on this match. We take Newell’s Old Boys to win at 1.85 (betsson).

Recomended bet

Newell's Old Boys 1.85

    HØDD V MOLDE

This NM cupen game is going to be an interesting one. Hødd is reigning NM Cup champion in Norway. They are currently fourth in Adecco Ligaen, and so far this season they have been really compact defensively. They have absolutely no pressure against the reigning Tippeliga champions.

Molde has started this season in a fashion that can only be described as horrible. However after 0-0 away to Rosenborg and a 4-0 win against Hønefoss last Tippeliga match day things look on the up for Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s men heading into the Tippeliga break. They should be able to take that positive momentum into this game and show Hødd who’s boss.

1.84 (21/25) is a respectable price from Scandinavian Powerhouse Betsson

MILESEY’s BET OF THE DAY – THURSDAY
      ——————————————————-

      JAPAN V BULGARIA

This international friendly between Japan and Bulgaria is being played at the Toyota stadium. Japan is preparing for the upcoming Confederations Cup in Brazil as well as the WCQ-games remaining. They have recalled big name players in CSKA’s Honda and Inter’s Nagatomo. They’ll slot in well with the likes of Kagawa (Man U) and Uchida (Schalke).

Bulgaria is 2-4-0 in their WCQ-games and have slowly but surely been building a strong squad again, mainly based on yet to be discovered names for most of us. It was a surprise Tonev of Lech Poznan wasn’t called up. He usually takes on attacking midfield roles, and has scored 3 in 5 WCQ-games for Bulgaria so far this season. Spas Delev of CSKA Sofia is called in instead. He has been in fine form in the domestic league with 5 goals in 13, so I doubt he’ll weaken the team much.

      JAPAN V BULGARIA BETTING TIPS

Japan surely will want to give it a go with the Confederations Cup coming up in no time. In Bulgaria they have a very tough to beat opponent though. They have gone six games now without conceding more than three goals. On the other side of the coin, this Bulgaria side isn’t exactly pouring in goals. If one excludes the game against Malta that they won 6-0. They’ve only scored three more times in the six game interval mentioned above.

Japan are definitely favorites. 1.53-1.55 (8/15 – 4/7) isn’t useful though in a friendly like this even if they play at home. Bulgaria beat Holland away last year in a friendly (their most recent friendly away from home) so they’re more than capable of an upset.

Bulgaria +1 with Bet365 at 1.825 is my betting tips. Their defensive capabilities are clear for all to see, and Japan is not stronger than teams they’ve been dealing with lately.

    HOME and AWAY Double
    ———————————-

off to Finland for our first pick of the day – as in-form Honka welcome FC Lahti to the Tapiolan Urheilupuisto, looking to make it four home wins on the bounce.

Mika Lehkosuo’s side have been formidable on their own patch of late, and that form has lifted them into fifth position in the Viekkausliiga with nine games played.

And a 2-1 win on the road at KuPS last time out will have boosted morale in the Keltamustat camp, as the Espoo side look to improve on a seventh placed finish last campaign.

Visitors Lahti line up for this clash in miserable form, and just one win from their opening eight league outings suggests that the Mustat Kuhnurit are in for a struggle this campaign.

Tommi Kautonen’s side currently sit second bottom of the table, and will be desperate to arrest that slump this evening – but four losses and a draw from their last five suggests that they might struggle to engineer a turnaround in Espoo.

In the bigger picture, that makes five away outings without a win this campaign, and that travel sickness threatens to derail Lahti’s season before it’s even really begun.

I fancy the hosts’ momentum and vigour to stand them in good stead in this clash – and, with home advantage, I reckon they’ll secure all three points.

    Bet 1: Honka (HOME) @ 1.92
    ************************

Turning our attentions to slightly warmer climes now, and the Brazilian Serie A, as Cruzeiro look to continue their recent impressive form, at Atletico PR.

The visitors began the new league campaign with a whopping 5-0 thrashing of Goias last week, and they will be keen to build on that result as they look to make it 19 wins from 20 games in all competitions.

Marcelo de Oliveira Santos’ side have notched a massive nine goals in their last two games, and that attacking threat gives them a real chance of securing a positive results in Parana this evening.

Hosts Atletico PR line up for this one having won just one of their last five, and a 2-1 opening day loss to Fluminense sees them sitting 15th in the table ahead of this one.

Ricardo Drubscky’s charges will be desperate to correct that in front of their own fans, but no clean sheets in half a dozen outings suggests that they might struggle against the final third might of their guests.

    Bet 2: Cruzeiro (AWAY) @ 2.52

    ENGLAND V REPUBLIC OF IRELAND

England take on old rivals Republic of Ireland at Wembley for the 1st time since 1991. Indeed the sides have only met once since that date and that was the ill fated match in Dublin which was almost abandoned.

England go into the friendly in mixed form and also with a serious chance of missing out on another World Cup. In a group with Ukraine, Poland and Montenegro the English are making hard work of it. England sit in 2nd place in the group 2 points behind suprise leaders Montenegro but only 4 points ahead of Poland and Ukraine who both have a game in hand. Since the defeat to Italy on penalties in Euro 2012 England have won 4, drawn 3 and lost once. This run is including a friendly win over Brazil. They have scored 25 goals and conceded 8 but with 18 coming against whipping boys Moldova and San Marino results have not been great for England at all. As expected after the season has finished, England suffer a handful of withdrawals from the squad. Steven Gerrard, Andy Carrol, Jack Wilshire and Tom Cleverly all leave the side. The only suprise in the side is Manchester City’s Jack Rodwell, apart from him its the same old faces.

Republic of Ireland are in battling away as usual, but seem to lack the quality and team spirit of the last few years. They are in a really tough group indeed, after being paired with all conquering Germany all the rest of group C were looking at the runners up spot at best. Ireland sit in joint 2nd position after 5 games. Since their awful showing in Euro 2012 Ireland have had a mixed bag of results. While 4 wins, 3 draws and 3 defeats seems like a decent return they have only managed to beat one side of note in Poland. Wins over Oman, Faroe Islands and Kazakhstan will impress few people. With 15 goals scored and 12 conceded in that straight forward run of games it shows a weakness in the Ireland side. Germany walloped them 6-1 in Dublin and Serbia outplayed them for long parts of their 0-0 draw. The limited nature of the Irish squad is highlighted by the replacements brought into this game after the withdrawals of Paul Green, Kevin Doyle and Anthony Pilkington. Stephen Quinn makes his 1st squad for 6 years and Robbie Keane is given leave from the MLS to make the game.

ENGLAND – REPUBLIC OF IRELAND: BETTING TIPS

This should be a straight forward win for England in a match against one of their oldest enemies. The disparity in the squad strengths is there for all to see with Ireland struggling to name players from England league 1 these days. Every English player is head to head better than their opposing number and no Ireland player would get in the English 1st eleven. Ireland used to compensate for this with an incredible will to win and an unsurpassed team spirit but this has long since evaporated. The price on England is too short for our selection so we take England -1 at 1.75. England are shortening up all the time as the money is all for the home side so suggest an early bet before all value has gone.

    MULTIPLE MAGIC
    ————————-

    Bet 1: England (HOME) @ 1.44 (4/9) – Live on ITV1 at 20:00 GMT

We begin in London as England take on Ireland in a ‘friendly’ at Wembley Stadium. Due to the histories of the two teams I can’t see it being played at half pace and given that fact, England should have more than enough quality to pick up the win.

There was further confusion over the England captaincy yesterday but after numerous clarifications, it was confirmed that Ashley Cole would be the skipper. Cole is winning his 100th cap this evening and while he’ll be in celebratory mood, he’ll be desperate to lead the team to victory.

Steven Gerrard, Jack Wilshere and Tom Cleverley are absent through injury but the squad is still a strong one and it’s likely that Frank Lampard will partner Michael Carrick in midfield with Wayne Rooney leading the line up front.

Ireland have an impressive away record in competitive matches and while they haven’t been defeated in a friendly away from Ireland since 2004, they’ve only played six and their two most recent ones ended in 0-0 draws in Hungary and Serbia last summer.

Giovanni Trapattoni has problems in defence for tonight as Marc Wilson is out with a calf strain and Aston Villa’s Ciaran Clark is also injured. Robbie Keane is available after being released to play by LA Galaxy, but he’s not exactly the player he was and the English defence should be able to contain him.

    Bet 2: FC Basel (AWAY) @ 1.65 (13/20)

Our away victory comes from Switzerland as FC Basel will be looking to school Young Boys in Bern.

Basel are clinging on to top spot in the Swiss Super League and with two games to go they are three points clear of Grasshopper. It is almost imperative that they take all three points tonight as they lost to their closest challengers on Sunday and they won’t want to risk going into the final day of the season level on points – despite their healthy goal difference – as they’re in for a tricky match with third placed St Gallen.

Murat Yakin’s men have lost their last two on the road and they also suffered cup final heartbreak on penalties – once again to Grasshopper. Prior to that though, FCB were undefeated in six on the road domestically, winning four times.

Young Boys finished third last term but the wheels have fallen off this season and they’re down in seventh place. Bernard Challandes’ side have lost three of their last five and after usually being relatively strong at Wankdorf, they’ve won just two of their last six – falling to three defeats.

This is an end of season game where one team has huge motivation to win whereas the other has nothing to play for. That usually only points in one direction and I’m confident that Basel will get the job done.

Bet 3: Newells v Boca Juniors (Over 2.5 goals) @ 2.3 (13/10) – ESPN and Betfair Live Video at 23:30 GMT

With a degree of trepidation, our search for goals takes us to Argentina for a Copa Libertadores second leg quarter-final clash between Newell’s Old Boys and Boca Juniors.

The first leg between this pair finished 0-0 at Boca last Thursday and in an interesting twist of fate, they met again in the league on Sunday. Newell’s ran out 4-0 winners on that occasion and while I think we’ll be in for goals again, the scoreline should be much closer.

It’s been a case of Jekyll and Hyde for Boca this season as they’ve been dreadful in the league but much improved in the Libertadores. Manager Carlos Bianchi is a club legend and he will be desperate to win his fifth Libertadores trophy – his fourth with Boca.

Newell’s are currently top of the Torneo Final with just four games to go and they look set to face Velez Sarsfield in the Primera Division final at the end of June. Gerardo Martino will be eyeing up an historic double for his side and the 0-0 in the first leg has given them the slight advantage going into tonight.

The Old Boys need to tighten up at the back though as they will be eliminated with a score draw. Aside from the clean sheet they earned against an under-strength Boca at the weekend, they haven’t kept one at Estadio Marcelo Bielsa in any of their last half dozen. They do score plenty themselves though and it’s 18 in seven at home for La Lepra.

    Bet 4: Sao Paulo v Vasco Da Gama (Under 2.5 goals) @ 1.6 (6/10)

We conclude in Brazil for a Serie A match-up between Sao Paulo and Vasco Da Gama. The home side should get the job done, but I can’t see there being many goals.

Both of these sides won their opening game of the league campaign at the weekend, and both matches went under 2.5 goals as both the victors kept a clean sheet.

Sao Paulo finished fourth last term after having a strong finish and Ney Franco will be hoping his side can start better this year and challenge for the title. They warmed up for the season by reaching the last 16 of the Copa Libertadores and the semi-finals of the Paulista A1 – before being knocked out by Corinthians on penalties after a 0-0 draw.

Vasco Da Gama finished one place below Sao Paulo last time and they started their year strongly by winning Group A of the Taca Guanabara before eventually falling to Botafogo in the final. Things weren’t as good in the Taca Rio though as Paulo Autuori’s team could only finish seventh of eight in Group A – scoring just five goals in seven matches.

If you needed further persuasion that under 2.5 goals is the way to go for this one, then their recent head to head record shows that the last six meetings between the pair have all had two goals or less.

    Recommended Multiple
    Back England @ 1.44 (4/9)
    Back FC Basel @ 1.65 (13/20)
    Back Over 2.5 Goals in Newells v Boca Juniors @ 2.3 (13/10)
Back Under 2.5 Goals in Sao Paulo v Vasco Da Gama @ 1.6 (6/10)

The Multiple pays approximately 8.74 (15/2)

    USA V BELGIUM

This international friendly is taking place in Cleveland. USA under Jurgen Klinsmann has proven tough to beat, but hasn’t really taken a step forward. At the minute they’re third in their World Cup qualifying group (top three goes through). That is just about where they should be in terms of quality minimum in my opinion. Their squad holds few surprises.

So far the USA hasn’t really produced as much young talent as one would hope either, so the squad is fairly experienced in terms of age. Belgium on the other hand has a very young, and incredibly talented squad. With the likes of Hazard, Fellaini, Benteke, Mirallas and Lukaku there is plenty of promise going forward. At the back they got wonderful players such as Kompany, Vertonghen, Veermaelen and van Buyten. The last mentioned is set to sit out here though as Bayern Munich is still in-season with a Cup final coming up. As if that’s not enough their midfield contains players such as Witsel, Dembele and Defour.

    USA V BELGIUM BETTING TIPS

This match won’t be played in much heat, so the USA won’t have an advantage there. Allthough USA has managed some pretty solid results at home soil I just think there is too much promise in Belgium. They can play fast football on the ground, and up front they have physical beasts in Benteke and Lukaku need be. This team is just about complete.

BET365 offers 13/10 (2.30) for the away win, and I am definitely taking it.

    ATLETICO MINEIRO v CLUB TIJUANA

One of the most fascinating ties of the quarter finals is Club Atletico Mineiro against Tijuana , Xolos were only formed in 2007 but have already earned their place amongst the best in Mexico. Atletico are one of the best sides in Brazil at the moment and are the tournament favourites.

Atletico Mineiro have experienced great success in the local state Minas Gerais championship (winning 42 titles) but have only managed the 1 win in Brazil Serie A. Mineiro have not had the best of years until recently. Finishing 2nd in 1999 was their only decent finish until last year. In 2012 with a fine squad assembled they challenged for the title for most of the long season. Fluminense prevailed in the end but Mineiro more than matched them. Mineiro in this seasons Minas Gerais state championsip have had a good warm up. In a weak regional section were only eternal rivals Cruzeiro challenges them they finished at champions again with an overall record of 12 wins, 0 draws and 3 defeats. Including in this run was a sequence of 8 consecutive home wins. In Copa Libertadores this season Atletico Mineiro without a doubt have been the most impressive side so far. With 7 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat they have breezed through the tournament scoring 22 and conceding 11. They have a very dangerous squad with Ronaldinho turning back the clock and totally dominating games. Accompanied by tournament top scorer Jo and assisted by crack striker Diego Tardelli and backed up with the exciting midfielder Bernard. Atletico have a clean bill of health and a superb squad of players to choose from.

Club Tijuana are a very young club in Mexico but have all the right infrastructure to go far. They have a single league Mexico Apertura victory from 2012 to their name. Tijuana have not had a good Clausera, indeed they finished 10th of 18 teams with 6 wins, 3 draws and 8 defeats. Struggling away from home for the majority of the closing season.Tijuana have been a revelation in this year’s Copa Libertadores however. With a record of 5 wins, 3 draws and 1 defeat, they remain undefeated at home so far despite facing up to the likes of Corinthians, Palmeiras and Millionares. Key men of Xolos are attacking midfielder Fernando Arce, winger Fidel Martinez and defensive mainstay Javier Gandolfini. Missing this game with a suspension is Pablo Aguilar.

ATLETICO MINEIRO – CLUB TIJUANA: BETTING TIPS

A huge game for both sides and another game that I feel could be a cracking tie. I cannot look past Atletico Mineiro though. The home leg looked to have clinched the tie as yet again Xolos started soldidly and indeed raced into a 2-0 lead. Mineiro showed their class though and Diego Tardelli was the difference with a goal and an assist. I cannot see the Mexicans getting anything in Brazil and with a carnival atmosphere planned in Minas Gerais with thousands of Scream mask delivered it could be a horror show for Tijuana.

I see an easy home win here and take Atletico Mineiro -1 goal at 1.73 with bet365 . The price on the home side is shortening, take the bet as soon as you can to get the top price.

    LAY OF THE DAY
    ———————–

An under-strength Germany begin their US Tour this evening as they take on Ecuador in Florida and the South Americans can avoid defeat.

Ecuador are on a roll at the moment and are in a fantastic position to qualify for Rio 2014 after picking up 20 points from 10 qualifying matches to date. They sit in second place – five points clear of the dreaded play-off position, with a game in hand.

Reinaldo Rueda will be using this fixture as a warm-up for their June qualifiers against Peru and Argentina and it is highly likely that he’ll play a strong side to try and continue their impressive unbeaten run. The Ecuadorians are up to 10th in the Fifa World rankings, have won their last eight straight friendlies and haven’t lost any of their last 13.

Thanks to the all-German Champions League final, Germany are massively under-strength for this much criticised tour of America. The only familiar faces to the first team will be the likes of Lukas Podolski and Per Mertesacker and they haven’t exactly been at their best of late.

Freiburg striker Max Kruse is set to make his debut for this one and Bayer Leverkusen pair Sidney Sam and Nicolai Muller are in the squad for the first time. Reinforcements will arrive in time for the more high profile clash with USA on Sunday, but for tonight, Joachim Low will have to make do with a lot of young, inexperienced players.

The Germans have drifted plenty in the betting since the markets opened, but even still, at around the 1.9 mark, they have to be taken on given the make-up of the two sides and the fact that Ecuador are seemingly underrated. That’s why, at the prices, I have to make Germany my lay of the day.
