ON Sunday I tried a nap experiment on Italian football but haven't had a chance yet to look at the results.

However, I like the idea of focusing on country or league each day and asking for experts in that field to contribute.

I know a little about Irish football but not enough and with 12 matches north and south of the border tonight it would be great if fans of those clubs or people with a good knowledge of the game there put up tips.

There are three games in the Setanta Sports Cup – Coleraine v Dundalk, Sligo v Crusaders and St Pat's v Ballinamallard. In the EA Sports Cup there are eight ties including Cork v Limerick, Crumlin Utd v Drogheda and Shelbourne v Bray.

Anyone know which of these ties has the best chance of producing a few goals? Are you Oor man in Dublin or Oor bloke in Belfast? And in the Northern Ireland Cup Glentoran face Glenavon.

I asked for tips and got them so thanks to everyone who contributed. Having waded through them all the most popular picks are St Pat's -2, Glentoran and Bohemians – I'm on it.

Irish treble

St Pat's -2

Glentoran

Coleraine are big price 11/4 IMO – we’re just coming off the back of a 4-1 defeat in our local derby, to a very ordinary team. Our defence was shambolic. I’ll be punting on Coleraine for sure.

    • Mr Fixit 10 years ago

DundalkBloke, great stuff – just what we need.

  2. Michael 10 years ago

Well I l lived in cork for 6 years from 2005-2011 and know that the game v limerick is something of a limerick derby expect a few goals both teams like to attack and rarely hold back.

    • Mr Fixit 10 years ago

      Michael, thanks for that.

  3. Craig Alves 10 years ago

Bohemians away to UCD surely at 10/11, beat them on Friday 3-0 at same venue in the league but this is cup game and it is a Dublin Derby??

    • paddy gooner 10 years ago

Dublin Derby lol sounds like a pub crawl! I agree with e on that Bohemians away win. Prices are 7/10 @ Paddy Power. Where’d you get your prices Craig Alves?

  4. Hibee 10 years ago

Just started twitter and through that I have found this site. Always follow your tips in the Record Mr Fixit. Anyway, Hi all. My mate played in Ireland 09-12 so I (through him) have a decent knowledge of the leagues. However Friday’s acca was a loser… Cork/Pats draw, Bohemians, Longford & LIMERICK. Saturday/Sunday treble of both Shamrock teams BTTS & SLIGO -1 was also a loser. Should have singled them all for a profit but all these results were highly fancied so went all out on the acca. Few thoughts on the season ahead… Pats and Longford should on paper win there respective leagues, UCD (my 2.5 favourites) to be whipping boys in the Prem & if results and performances continue from the 2013 season – Fenlon to be Shamrock Rovers next manager. Thoughts on Setanta Cup. Coleraine v Dundalk. DUNDALK WIN. Manager Stephen Kenny loves cups. They were 2 disgracefull red card decisions away from an FAI cup final last year, year before he got Shamrock to League cup final and was unlucky not to get them to Setanta Final(rested number of 1st players for home leg Semi v Derry only for dodgy red card to GK that resulted to a penalty kick and a 3-0 defeat, played 1st team in 2nd leg and they won that 2-0) before getting sacked.2011 season he won won league cup with a then 1st Division Derry City. It’s 3-2 Coleraine from 1st leg by the way. Sligo v Crusaders. SLIGO -1 or 2, over 2.5/3.5. Crusaders are in a 2 way fight for the 3rd European spot in there league, tie is over, will prob field weakened team. Sligo have top striker Danny North back for this after his suspension for sats league game and are prolific scorers at home anyway. I can see 3+ goals in this one. St Pats v Bali. ST PATS -1/2/3 or over 2.5/3.5. This tie is only 1-0 because Bali’s pitch is similar to a cow field. St Pats have enough depth to field an entirely different 11 to Fridays draw however they won’t as it’s only 1-0, can’t see anything other than a convincing home win.

    • Mr Fixit 10 years ago

Hibee, good write-up. I saw pics of Ballinamallards’ pitch and concensus seems to be on a big St Pat’s win so will bear that in mind for when I post the Irish treble later.

I’m an Irish League (N. Ireland) watcher and I strongly fancy Glentoran to beat Glenavon in their Irish Cup QF tonight. I’ve had a quick check with team news, and even though the home side have 2 first team defenders rated as 50/50, I think they’ll both make it.

My main reasoning is that Glentoran are traditionally an Irish cup team, they hold the competition in the highest regard and their fans turn out in big numbers for the cup (by local standards) and are usually very vocal. They are the current holders and I fancy them to have too much at home tonight against a decent but not as good away side.

Paddy Power has them at 5/6

  8. jimmybeee 10 years ago

St pats -2 will be my nap tonight on abetter surface st pats should win this easy.
    St pats -2 nap

  9. jimmybeee 10 years ago

St pats -2 6/5 with bet 365 sorry

  10. Mickdundee 10 years ago

Well mr – F, your new man in limerick will be quick to point out that the limerick cork game Friday night could still be playing and there still might be no goals. That said it was the first game of the season, the home team had a man sent off and cup games tend to be a bit more open affairs. I’m gonna go do some more research but am edging towards a cork victory. I am a limerick fan but also a realist.

  11. Craig Alves 10 years ago

Bet365 Paddy, 5/6 just now with them

  12. archieman 10 years ago

Hi im on glentoran tonight, glentoran findin there form again and should outclass glenavon at the oval, i rather back coleraine winning margin of 1 against a bad dundalk defence, tho a tight game

    Glentoran@ 10/11
    Coleraine winning margin 1 @9/2
    Prices with 365

  13. Mickdundee 10 years ago

Cork limerick seems a lottery. Double Bohs with Waterford

  14. Mickdundee 10 years ago

    Bohs Waterford St.Pats I fancy

  15. Harry 10 years ago

Irish games are cup games and managers will be playing weakened teams after weekend games.

one game that does warrant an intrest tho is the

    ucd v bohemiams

Bohemians make the trip to Belfield for the second time in 72 hours and will be hoping for a similar outcome to Friday’s league game, which they won 3-0. Robbie Creevy is sidelined for the hosts and manager Aaron Callaghan will give playing time to some fringe players.

“I will be looking to give game time to players who didn’t feature on Friday and I expect to see these players make the most of this opportunity and advance to the next round.

Bohemians win @ 4/5 boyle sports

The waterford v Avondale game should see a win for waterford who play two leagues above Avondale,

Avondale are a very good intermediate team who are going for a record four in a row intermediate cups, play Tolka rovers in the semi final on the 30th, cannot see them risking injuries or suspensions against Waterford,

Short odds but Waterford win @ 4/9 paddy power

Waterford minus a goal 11/10@ boyle sports

  16. Harry 10 years ago

Michael, not so sure about goals in the cork v Limerick game, like you say its a derby, and cork city played 4-5-1 on friday as both strikers are injured, also Limerick drew 0-0 home to bray at the weekend in a fairly uninspiring game,

  17. Chris Alchin 10 years ago

hello, theres a very strong dependable triple available here to double your money, and worth a large stake. Galway will easily beat mayo league, a much weaker team. Sligo should also beat crusaders at home easily coming off a 4-1 win last leg. Lastly, draw no bet on drogheda who should easily dominate much weaker lower league team crumlin. Thanks:)

Fitba, Can you give me a website that has starting lineups for tonight’s Shelbourne game as I know a player on the team.

    • Fitba Tips 10 years ago

      Hi Cooldude

rte.ie seems to be slow on the uptake this season. It seems like the state broadcaster has taken some funding away from the LOI. Flagship programme MNF has moved slot and lost half an hour and their online coverage used to include previews of all games but not yet so far.

@shelsfc on twitter should update teams as and when, their website has nothing to show so far.

    • Fitba Tips 10 years ago

The website also used to offer the MNF programe to people outside of Ireland and streamed live games too but alas no more. Just another scunner from the weekend :/

  19. Sean 10 years ago

Mr F, I would advise extreme caution tonight on the Irish games. Theyre in the EA Sports Cup which is the Irish equivalent to the Capital One, as in it’s very much the secondary domestic cup competition to the FAI Cup. There are often shock results but the games I like are Crumlin vs DUNDALK, WATERFORD vs Avondale, FINN HARPS vs Cockhill and ucd vs BOHEMIANS. A quad of the 4 teams in caps returns 17/4 and I’ll stick a few quid on it. Also, Shels vs Bray looks a nailed on draw, and I fancy a draw in Cork vs Limerick aswell. I’d also tip the 3 League of Ireland teams to win up North, even though Dundalk lost their first leg. But all in all, you have to be cautious with the Irish games tonight, as there will be a shock or two.

  20. mmmowles 10 years ago

Avondale to win 1.0 nap @bet365

  21. GinjarBear 10 years ago

GinjarBear’s contribution to this is Finn Harps, St Patricks -1 and Cork city…my expertise being that I once went to a wedding in Ireland!! Lol :-D good luck everyone! :-)

  22. cooldude 10 years ago

Fitba, I cannot imagine there will be many websites streaming a game like that?

    • Fitba Tips 10 years ago

      I very much doubt it

  23. Fitba Tips 10 years ago

I havent had a lot of time to research tonight’s games but Sligo and Pats have to be big favourites.

i see Ballinamallard conceded 5 again last time out sp Pats should be capable of at least 2 but I would be wary about going beyond that as they have not been big scorers at any point over last season or the start to this one.

Sligo could bang in a couple but with that match already over I am leaving well enough alone.

IN the EA Cup Drogheda look like value away to non-league Crumlin at 1.73 with Boyles. Crumlin is just up the road for them so no worries about travel as most of their players will probably be Dublin based anyway. Crumlin did beat Drgheda a few years back (2010) but since then their forays against league opp have resulted in fairly substantial defeats.

they are the only games i have any interest in although Bohs, as has been mentioned could be a shout but I am always wary of backing against a team who just lost heavily to the same team. UCD will have spotted exactyl what went on friday and surely will have taken steps to fix that. In my experience 2 games agaisnt the same team in a row rarely play out the same way.

Cork and Limerick is interesting but hard to call. not touching Dundalk. Dundalk, what went wrong? Pretty sure Kenny will turn it around there but will wait for signs of an upturn in form (cue Dundalk win 0-4 :D).

If you’re looking for a high odds shot I would cautiously suggest bray away to Shelbourne but DNB insurance would prob be best if you can better than evens (2.25 365). Im not touching it though becuase as someone else has mentioned teams will be rotated. The league cup is nobody’s priority.

  24. cooldude 10 years ago

Fitba, I remember that Crumlin game, and one of the goals which was on MNS was unbelievable. I think it was inside his own half!!!

    • Fitba Tips 10 years ago

Freak goals arent all that uncommon in LOI

I remember Question Of Sport featured a goal by Dundalk’s Brian Byrne a number of years ago when he ran from inside his own box after the oppositions keeper had come up for a corner in the “what happened next” segment.

Apparently Derry’s goal yesterday was also a bit “freakish”. Flimmining flackerknackings.

    • cooldude 10 years ago

Fitba, I missed Rovers game yesterday, quite surprised they only drew considering all the new signings. Was it a full strength team and who scored?

    • Fitba Tips 10 years ago

Mcphail started on the bench, surprisingly. Ciaran Kilduff equalised for Rovers

  25. cooldude 10 years ago

Mr F, Im not an expert on Irish football but have been following it for a few years.
I believe that LOI standard is generally accepted to be ahead of the Irish league, but the gap is not that big.

Generally speaking the league cup is taken with a pinch of salt, so with this in mind tonight Im going for UCD 5/2 and Crumlin double chance at 1/1

  26. cooldude 10 years ago

Fitba, Id be interested to hear your list on the top 10 players in LOI.

    • Fitba Tips 10 years ago

      Jeezo now theres a challenge

  27. TY57ELL 10 years ago

Glentoran are very poor at home. This season the Glens have only won 5 of there 21 games at home in all competitions. For me Glenavon double chance @ 4/5 and Glenavon over 1.5 tg @ 6/4 are the best bets. COYB

    • TY57ELL 10 years ago

Glenavon double chance- won Glenavon over 1.5 tg- won

  28. GinjarBear 10 years ago

That’s another fine treble contribution from the Bear :-D think I should go to more weddings in Ireland haha :-D horses tomorrow methinks with some of the winnings, am counting on Sociedad to hold onto this 2-1 lead for a nice 5-fold :-D
