MICHAEL APPLETON has been heavily backed for the West Brom but Chris Hughton still remains favourite to pip him for the post.

Bookies cut caretaker boss Appleton from 7-1 to 5-2 second favourite behind former Newcastle gaffer Hughton who is 6-4.

Ladbrokes also brought Roy Hodgson in from 10-1 to 5-1 but Sam Allardyce is out from 5-1 to 12-1.

Alan Irvine is shortest-priced new addition to the market at 6-1 with Roy Keane a 20-1 chance.

Meanwhile, William Hill have opened a book on where former England manager Steve McClaren will manage next after losing his job in Germany with Wolfsburg – and make the Championship their 7-2 favourite.

A return to Holland where he won the title with Twente is joint 4-1 second favourite with the Premier League.  Any other is 6-1, any international team 8-1, Scotland 10-1, France 16-1, Italy, Spain 20-1.
