Thursday’s Racing Tips – Return to fences for Lady Pretender makes her of serious interest at Warwick

Cairnzy's only runner of Wednesday ran well in defeat but ran out of puff in the final furlong or two when the odds-on favourite pressured him for the lead. Rubber Ball jumped brilliantly on hurdles debut, and did nothing wrong in defeat, he was simply outclassed.

Rizzel's Tips

Sedge Wren 12/1 (EW 3pl) – Warwick 1.53

In this race I was drawn to the horses at the bottom of the weights, and I ended up going with Sedge Wren who is still very unexposed as a racehorse and will hopefully have come on for the recent run, and now proven she is on a very workable handicap mark.

Stuart Edmunds' 6-year-old mare is 2/4 over hurdles, and her two defeats have come on the back of big layoffs and heavy or soft ground, which I'm sure doesn't suit this mare. Her two wins in novice and maiden company came on a much sounder surface, so I believe the return to a quicker surface at Warwick today makes her of interest against horses who will prefer the ground to be slower, or look to be on tough handicap marks.

The form isn't anything spectacular from the two wins, but having a horse who is able to win races like that is a very likeable trait. She is hardly running off a high handicap mark to the start of her life in handicaps and I think she is worth a shot towards the bottom of the weights now she is getting her ideal conditions and has had a run under her belt 23 days ago.

For Gina was the other horse who was tempting. She normally runs over further, and has to prove she is able to win off today's mark as she has struggled in recent runs whilst having a 7lb claimer on board, who is not on today. However, she likes good ground and is 3/14 over hurdles with many good efforts in defeat.

Lady Pretender 4/1 – Warwick 3.00

There is always a strong chance that a Venetia Williams horse is going to be well-supported on their first start over fences for the yard, and I think Lady Pretender will probably follow suit.

I'm not sure how long Venetia has done this but, she acquired many horses from France, but for the first season, she keeps them over hurdles even though the horses have chasing experience. They tend to run badly and their handicap marks drop down, but when they come back for their second season they are straight over fences and often make winning returns off much lower handicap marks. This is what I'm hoping for with Lady Pretender who has some solid chase form from France and she is now running off a mark of 99, which is 94 as Ned Fox takes off 5lbs.

Her form has taken a noticeable boost by Sweet David who came over from France to Cheltenham to win the X-Country handicap last week, and winning it in taking style, recording an RPR of 150. Sweet David beat Lady Pretender by 7L, with my selection finishing as runner-up to that horse.

The ground might be the only concern for Lady Pretender as it's going to be good to soft, or good, but I think she is worth a shot off a low mark.
