Football Bet of the Day: Swiss Bliss for Goals in Switzerland on Thursday

Thursday’s Football Bet of the Day sees me focus on the European ties, and one of them in particular appeals to me for goals at both ends.

Basel welcome Italian side Fiorentina to St. Jakob-Park in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final tomorrow evening, and I’m predicting a high-scoring affair.

Basel’s domestic struggles continued on Sunday afternoon as they were thrashed 6-1 away at 7th-placed St Gallen, leaving them languishing in 6th spot – four points outside the European places. However, prior to their impressive 1-2 victory in Florence last Thursday, the RotBlau knocked out Trabzonspor and Slovak champions Slovan Bratislava in the Conference League before seeing off French side Nice in the quarter-finals, eventually winning 4-3 on aggregate in extra time.

Fiorentina claimed just their second victory across their previous seven Serie A fixtures at the weekend, as they defeated Udinese 2-0 at home to move up into 8th position in the table. Before their surprise 1-2 defeat at the Franchi in the first leg, La Viola saw off Braga and Turkish side Sivasspor before eventually knocking out Polish side Lech Poznan in the quarter-finals 6-4 on aggregate.

Bet of the Day

Heiko Vogel’s hosts have scored 23 goals across their 13 Conference League group-stage and knockout fixtures, with 11 of those coming at home. The RotBlau have found the back of the net in 11 of those matches – striking on multiple occasions in nine of their previous 10 – and I reckon they’ll trouble a Viola defence that has conceded nine goals across their last six European contests.

Vincenzo Italiano’s visitors have banged in an incredible 32 goals across their previous 11 Conference League ties, with 18 of them coming across their last five away from home. La Viola have made the net bulge at least twice in nine of their previous 11 Conference League fixtures – scoring three or more in seven (64%) of them – and I fully expect them to trouble a Basel defence that has recorded just one clean sheet across their last 11 European matches, conceding 17 goals.
