Man Utd v Wigan, Sunday, 2pm, Wembley

DAVIE MOYES never won a trophy at Everton – but could lift one in his first competitive match in charge of Man United tomorrow.

I say “competitive” but of course the Community Shield is more of a warm-up to the big kick-off next weekend.

Having said that United's opponents Wigan have already racked up a league win and appear in the showpiece curtain-raiser as the first lower-league team to feature since West Ham in 1980.

The Hammers went down 1-0 to Liverpool but despite an indifferent pre-season a similar scoreline would be a surprise.

Moyes needs to lay down a marker and there will be no charity shown to Owen Coyle's side who have lost 16 of 17 matches against the Red Devils.

They have lost 10 of the last 12 without and conceded 38 goals, including two 4-0 defeats last season.

Another 4-0 is maybe asking a lot but it's worth recording that it pays 14-1 at Coral. More likely is Man Utd winning to nil at 29-20 with William Hill.

Wigan of course beat Man City to win the FA Cup Final under Roberto Martinez but United are no bigger than 4-11 at Coral to triumph in 90 minutes.

Robin van Persie is 4-1 at William Hill to score first but it's worth noting Javier Hernandez has netted six in six games against the Latics. If he starts the Mexican could be worth a look at 9-2 with Paddy Power.

The Community Shield has a reputation as a low scorer but the last four have produced 18 goals with United netting eight in their previous three appearances so hopefully we'll see a few more on Sunday.

James, I’m looking at this one from a stats point of view. I take what you say but at the end of the day Wigan are a Championship team and are playing the English champions. United will win if they really want to.

kuti, Man Utd haven’t played a proper game under Moyes yet so don’t judge them on friendlies. But any game could be btts especially one which isn’t 100 per cent serious.

if manchester united play like playing against seasonal game, this should not a lot of hope into this victory. Lots of losses, Rooney does not play, the players looked like a square not know what it operational. still need time to get used to a new coach ….
