I'm very happy that Aintree is over for another year as it wasn't a happy hunting ground for me this year.
However, I was very pleased to see Corach Rambler do the deed and win the Grand National. He's my favourite horse in training, so to see him win was a great spectacle, in a race full of controversy before and during the race. It was horrid to see the amount of fallers, and I'm sure those activists will thrive off that.
Huntingdon 2:40 – Master Malcolm 13/8 (1pt)
He is short enough in the betting now, but Master Malcolm has the best chance of winning this race. It looks like a competitive race on paper, but when you look through the runners, they're either not going to get the ground they want, probably on steep enough handicap marks or aren't in form.
Master Malcolm is the form horse of the race, having recently won by 21L at this track last time out. I'm sure connections wouldn't have wanted him to win by that distance as he has gone up 8lbs in the handicap as a result. However, he is still a 6yo and seems to be on an upward curve, so his new handicap mark of 100 can be dealt with.
Before his win, he had been running well in defeat. He finished as runner-up behind Concetto, who had been a tip on the thread, and had won a few since going over fences. This time of the year seems to bring the best out of him as he managed to win his second race of his career last March, and he has slowly come to form at a similar time.
Chestnut Pete is the one to be wary off after running well on chase debut behind a decent yardstick off a heavy weight, so has to be respected in this.
Huntingdon 4:25 – Drop Him In 7/4 (1pt)
I put up Drop Him In when he was subject to a big gamble, being backed in from 10/1 to win at SP of 3/1. I thought the 3m trip was going to bring out the improvement needed to win, and it did, as well as the factor of the money being down.
He did it quite easily that day over today's C&D, and on the back of that effort I think he can easily make it a second win in quick succession. He's gone up in the weights, but Lewis Stones takes away 5lbs of that with his apprentice claim.
The soft ground will be pose different problems for him, but he won nice enough on good to soft, and I don't think it will be an issue for him.
