Racing tips: Lac De Constance aims to remain unbeaten

Boxing Day was disappointing from a betting standpoint for me. All selections ran below what I expected, but on a competitive day like that, it's never easy. Hopefully, today's selections will run better!

Chepstow 2:50

Going for favourites in races of this nature isn't really something I go for, but I think QUICK WAVE fits the bill and looks like one of the likelier winners, which is why she is the favourite.

It's crazy to think how much progress she has shown from her last two runs at the age of 9, but it looks like she hasn't reached her ceiling yet and more could be on the way. She was a horse who was either really good or very poor before the two wins and I think the wind surgery she had back in July 2021 was the key which unlocked the progression needed for her to take her form to the next level. She has been ultra-impressive since the operation and has won two fairly competitive races in a canter like it was a piece of work at home. Her most recent win at Sandown was ridiculous to watch, she destroyed a decent Class 2 field and was heavily eased down to win by 4L. That was her first time over 3m 5f on a very tough track which tests your stamina, so today's trip isn't a concern she is only 4lb higher than she was when winning that day, so surely she comes into this with a great chance.

I am a little concerned about the weight she has to carry in this, as it is normally beneficial to carry small weights in this race, shown by the winners of past renewals. However, she did carry 11st 12lbs last time around, so is clearly capable of doing it, it's just whether she can do it in a better race.

I think it's important going for a horse who arrives in very good form for this race. You could give a chance to a fair few in this based on their current handicap mark and needing them to bounce back to form but it doesn't work that way all that much. I believe you're looking for a horse who is still progressing, like last year's winner Iwilldoit, who was impressive in his prep for the race, similar to Quick Wave. I am hopeful of a massive run.

Kempton 1:20

It's probably not going to happen now that I've said it, but I think this race is between Boothill and LAC DE CONSTANCE. You pick your horse based on the guaranteed form or the unknown form, with a very good visual impression. I've decided to go with the latter.

I understand why people will think Boothill is the bet in the race, he has won a couple of races this season, including a nice handicap at Ascot and then ran well to finish behind Jonbon, but for me, is he really that good or is his rating a bit inflated and. Don't get me wrong, I think he is a nice horse but I wouldn't say he's good enough to win a Grade 1 as that's what he'd be aiming at if winning this. Whereas, I think there is plenty of improvement to come from the Skelton horse who looked like a total natural over fences. Yes, the race fell apart on his chase debut but he could only do what he did and that was put in a lovely round of jumping and looking like a horse who is meant to be a chaser. I think they've always had this race in mind as they gave him his first chase race over today's course, to see how he'd get on and he clearly enjoyed his time. It's interesting that they wasted no time getting him to jump a fence, with only 3 runs over hurdles, winning all three, including a Class 1 Listed win, so he's clearly a horse with a lot of class.

There is a strong possibility that Harry Skelton won't be able to get the easy lead like he did last time as Acunrisque likes to run from the front. Hopefully, Harry doesn't engage in a pace battle but sits just behind and let his horse who looks a natural chaser to take yards out of his opposition at every fence and then kick for home. I shouldn't forget the only other horse in the race, Glory And Fortune who is a very good hurdler on his day, but he didn't look a natural over fences last time around so you'd have to be leaving him out for this race, though if he did have a clear round of jumping he'd be a player.
