There’s not much competitive football around today but we do have a cup final north of the border where The New Saints have gatecrashed the Scottish Challenge Cup.
It’s a tournament that invites two teams from the other home nations to participate and for just the second time one of them has made it to the final. Back in 2018 Connah’s Quay Nomads were beaten by Ross County, this time around it’s Airdrieonians who’ll attempt to make sure the trophy stays in Scotland.
It’s always hard to judge cross-border matches but the bookies rate the Welshmen (who actually play in England) slight favourites at 13/10, compared to the Diamonds’ 6/4.
The New Saints have been Welsh champions in 10 of the last 12 seasons and on the verge of adding another title this season. They powered their way past Championship strugglers Arbroath in the quarter-finals before inflicting defeat on runaway League One leaders Falkirk in the semi-final, proving they’re not just in the tournament to make up the numbers.
The final will be played at Falkirk’s stadium which does give the Scottish side a small degree of advantage and Rhys McCabe’s side go into the game in good form, unbeaten in five and in a strong position to take a run at the play-offs for promotion.
It’s a game that could go either way so the draw at 13/5 could be the best option.
