After earning a draw in Romania, Young Boys welcome CFR Cluj to Stadion Wankdorf for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League third round qualifier. The Swiss side will be banking on their solid home record and should advance.
Young Boys earned a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Romania. They fell behind early in the first half and laboured for much of the contest before Vincent Sierro scored a dramatic equaliser deep into added time.
The Swiss side head into Tuesday’s clash off the back of a 1-0 defeat at Sion in a Super League fixture. It was the first defeat in all competitions for David Wagner’s men, who have looked formidable in the early stage of the campaign.
Young Boys are unbeaten in their last four matches at home . Their one problem has been an inability to maintain their defensive discipline having kept just one clean sheet in their last five matches.
CFR Cluj will be disappointed for not seeing out the win at home in the first leg. They attempted to hold on to an early opener from Cristian Manea and looked to have done enough before conceding the equaliser in added time.
Marius Sumudica’s men are setting the pace in the Romanian Liga and sit two points clear at the top of the table. CFR Cluj have also impressed in the Champions League, although Young Boys are the first opponents with proper European experience.
CFR Cluj have been poor on the road in the Champions League and suffered a 2-1 defeat to Bosnian side Borac Banja Luka in one of their away fixtures in the previous rounds. They have also struggled defensively in the competition and have kept just one clean sheet in their last five matches.
How the bookies view it
Young Boys have been installed as overwhelming favourites by the bookies and are priced at 11/20 by novibet to win. CFR Cluj are considered outsiders at 61/10 by the same firm while a draw is set at odds of 17/5 by SBK.
Given CFR Cluj’s struggles on the road and with Young Boys’ often impressive at home, I am backing the Swiss team to claim the win.
Head to head
Young Boys have never lost to CFR Cluj with one win and three draws from five previous meetings. Their only victory was a 2-1 home win during the group stage of the 2020/21 Europa League.
Players to watch
Strikers Jordan Siebatcheu and Meschack Elia have impressed for Young Boys this season and will be the one to watch on Tuesday. The Swiss side produced over 1.5 goals in their previous home fixture in the competition and both men can fire them to a similar outcome at 4/6 with bet365.
CFR Cluj have multiple attacking threats with Claudiu Petrila and Gabriel Gabriel Debeljuh among the goals in recent weeks. The Romanians have scored in their last eight matches and with Young Boys often unconvincing at the back, they will be confident of once again finding the net at 5/8 with Vbet.
Anything else catch the eye?
Both teams were on target in the first leg and Sport Nation is offering evens for a repeat. Young Boys saw over 4.5 goals in their previous home fixture in the competition and a similar outcome is valued at 9/2 with bet365.
Over 3.5 goals is priced at 2/1 by bet365 who are also offering 4/5 on over 2.5 goals. Young Boys could be tipped to earn a win and over 2.5 goals at 7/5 with bet365 while they are also likely to score in both halves at 6/4 with the same firm.
