Three days on from their dramatic Premier League clash, Wolves welcome Liverpool back to Molineux on Friday night in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Wolves kept their ultra-slim survival hopes alive on Tuesday night, as Andre’s deflected strike deep in stoppage time secured a 2-1 win over the Reds.
Rob Edwards’ men also defeated fellow Champions League hopefuls Aston Villa 2-0 at Molineux last Friday to record back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time this season, and just their third victory overall – on an evening I landed an even-money winner.
However, the Old Gold are still 12 points adrift of safety with just eight games to play, but wins over League Two pair Grimsby Town and Shrewsbury Town have given them hope of success in this competition.
That defeat for Liverpool on Tuesday night put an end to their three-match winning run in the Premier League, with Arne Slot’s men falling down to sixth in the table, but they are still only three points behind Manchester United and Aston Villa in third and fourth position respectively.
The Reds have advanced to this stage of this competition thanks to a couple of comfortable home victories, defeating League One side Barnsley before winning 3-0 at home to Brighton & Hove Albion on Valentine’s Day.
How the bookies view it: Liverpool to bounce back
Liverpool are favourites to bounce back from their dramatic defeat at the Molineux on Tuesday night, with bet365 pricing an away win inside 90 minutes at 9/20 and just 2/9 To Qualify.
Wolves are 19/4 underdogs to make it two wins over Liverpool in the space of just three days and their third in front of their supporters in the space of seven days, whilst they are 3/1 just To Qualify.
Head to head: Liverpool on top
Prior to the above-mentioned Wolves win on Tuesday night, Liverpool had won each of their previous six meetings with the Old Gold, including a 2-1 victory at Anfield at the end of December.
Players to watch: Dom to deliver again?
Dominik Szoboszlai did the business for us last Saturday, as he set up Liverpool’s second from a corner following their 5-2 victory over West Ham United – on an afternoon both of my selections landed.
The Hungarian international has eight of those goal contributions across his previous 11 matches in all competitions for Arne Slot’s side, and the 11/10 on offer at bet365 for him to Score or Assist on Friday appeals to me.
Predicted line-ups:
Wolves appear to have no injuries, but midfielder Andre is suspended.
Liverpool will still be missing Giovanni Leoni, Conor Bradley, Wataru Endo and Alexander Isak through injury, but Florian Wirtz could return.
Wolverhampton Wanderers: Johnstone, Mosquera, Bueno, Krejci, Tchatchoua, Gomes, Bellegarde, Gomes, Bueno, Mane, Arokodare
Liverpool: Mamardashvili, Frimpong, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson, Jones, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Ngumoha, Salah, Ekitike
Anything else catch the eye?
Despite their position at the foot of the Premier League table, Rob Edwards has made Wolves hard to beat in recent months, with the Old Gold losing just four of their previous 14 matches in all competitions (W5-D5-L4).
Wolves have scored seven goals across their last four matches at Molineux – with all four of those fixtures coming against the top six in the Premier League table – including that 2-1 success against Liverpool on Tuesday night.
Both Teams to Score & Over 2.5 Goals landed in three of those – as well as in each of the previous four meetings between the clubs – and a repeat pays an appealing 1/1 at bet365.
