A place in Euro 2024 is the prize as Ukraine host Italy in their final Group C qualifier on Monday. Italy have shown signs of resurgence in recent times and should do enough to avoid defeat against their hosts, who have not been playing their home matches in Ukraine.
Ukraine head into Monday’s clash off the back of a 3-1 victory over Malta in their previous qualifying fixture. They fought back from a goal down with Artem Dovbyk and Mykhailo Mudryk on target after Ryan Camenzuli had out through his own net.
The result means Ukraine have now lost just once in their last seven matches across all competitions, claiming three wins in that run. However, Serhii Rebrov's men are still walking a tightrope in the qualifiers as they sit third in Group C and need a win on Monday to secure a place in next year’s tournament in Germany.
The Ukrainians are unbeaten in their last nine home matches across all competitions, although six of those fixtures have ended in draws. Also, following the war in Ukraine, they have not played on home soil in recent times and Monday’s clash at BayArena might feel like an away ground.
Italy put themselves back in contention in Group C as they picked up a 5-2 victory over North Macedonia last time out in the qualifiers. They proved too strong for their visitors with Federico Chiesa netting a brace while Matteo Darmian, Giacomo Raspadori and Stephan El Shaarawy were also on target.
The result means Italy have won three of their last four qualifying matches and now hold their fate in their own hands. They are level on 13 points with Ukraine but given their superior head to head and goal difference, all that is required to secure a place in Germany is to avoid defeat on Monday.
Avoiding defeat might prove tricky for Italy, who have not been particularly convincing on their travels. Luciano Spalletti’s men were beaten 3-1 by England in their previous away fixture, although they had played out a 1-1 draw with North Macedonia prior to that fixture while there is also a 3-2 UNL victory over Netherlands in their recent away fixtures.

Italy have the upper hand among the bookies and are priced at evens with Unibet to claim the win. Ukraine have been installed as outsiders at 3/1 by Paddy Power while William Hill is offering odds of 13/5 for a draw.
Head to head
Italy have never lost to Ukraine, claiming seven wins and two draws from nine previous meetings. The Italians picked up a 2-1 victory in the reverse fixture back in September.
Players to watch
Artem Dovbyk has carried his form for La Liga side Girona into the national team and was on target for Ukraine last time out. The striker could be worth keeping an eye on to score anytime at 41/20 by Unibet.
Federico Chiesa is often pivotal to Italy’s attacking plays and netted a brace last time out against Macedonia. The forward now has three goals in his last two international appearances and is priced at 13/5 by Unibet to find the net on Monday.
