Sporting CP host Club Brugge in a repeat of last season’s League Phase clash, but this time, the Lions will hope for a different outcome.
Sporting have not tasted defeat in nearly two months, with their last loss coming in the second round of the competition against Napoli. Since then, Sporting have achieved seven wins and two draws in all competitions.
This string of good results includes four consecutive home wins, which should give the Lions a lot of confidence ahead of what is theoretically their easiest match so far. By comparison, in previous rounds they played Juventus, Napoli, and Marseille.
Club Brugge are doing well on the home front, but have only managed one win in the first four rounds of the Champions League and are at the bottom of the 24-team qualifying group.
However, it is worth noting that they played brilliantly against Monaco (a 4-1 win) and Barcelona (3-3). Blauw-Zwart are certainly impressive with their attacking abilities, and this should definitely be a cause for concern for the home team.
How the bookies view it: Club Brugge to remain winless on the road
Bookmakers do not rate the visitors' chances highly, even after their impressive performances. Sporting are expected to confirm their form and achieve a fifth consecutive home win.
Currently, you can back Sporting at 7/10, while Club Brugge are available at 15/4. If you think the visitors can achieve another draw against a famous opponent, you can choose it at 16/5.
Recent head-to-head: Brugge stunned Sporting a year ago
Sporting and Club Brugge have little history between them, but nonetheless important, as it includes a match from last year’s League Phase. Last time, Blauw-Zwart were the hosts and managed a 2-1 win over Sporting.
Curiously, the teams also met in a friendly six years ago and it was once again Club Brugge that came out on top (3-2).
Players to watch: Goncalves is ready to wreak havoc in the midfield
After a mediocre 2024/25 campaign, Pedro Goncalves has finally regained his form and once again took on the playmaker role in the team. So far, he has scored nine goals and provided six assists in all competitions, contributing to seven goals in his last six appearances.
The Portuguese player was rested again in the cup match over the weekend and will be in top form for the important Champions League clash.
Probable line-ups
Sporting: Silva, Araujo, Inacio, Diomande, Vagiannidis, Simoes, Hjulmand, Santos, Trincao, Quenda, Ribeiro
Club Brugge: Jackers, Siquet, Ordonez, Mechele, Seys, Onyedika, Stankovic, Tzolis, Vanaken, Forbs, Tresoldi
Anything else catch the eye?
We are definitely expecting a competitive match, and the visitors have the potential to spring a surprise. However, their good performances have been in home games, while they lost both of their away games in the Champions League.
We have no choice but to take advantage of the good odds for the hosts and for over 2.5 goals, and we would even combine the two bets into one.
