Rangers vs Morton

, KO: 12:30 Aug 19, 2023, Ibrox
Morton

RANGERS made it through to the play-off round in midweek when a draw in Switzerland was enough to see them eliminate Servette.

Their prize is a Champions League play-off with Dutch cracks PSV Eindhoven and they could be forgiven for putting Saturday's Viaplay Cup game with Morton to the back of their minds.

But they would be wrong to underestimate their Championship opponents with Dougie Imrie's charges possible dark horses for the title this season.

And they love a goal too with 16 goals netted in their six matches so far in the league and cup.

Rangers boss Michael Beale would have been encouraged by their second half showing in Geneva, although they rode their luck in the first half.

They still aren't firing on all cylinders yet and Beale will surely take this opportunity to rest a few of his big-hitters with the PSV crunch first leg coming up fast on Tuesday.

Their strikers are showing some signs of gelling though, but you would think this will be a chance for Beale to use some of his fringe players against the Greenock side with the likes of Scott Wright or Kemar Roofe perhaps featuring.

How the bookies view it

Rangers are as short as 1/12 in places although you can get 1/7 with bet365. Morton can be backed at a huge 33/1 with Ladbrokes with the draw 15/2 with Coral.

Recent head to heads

The sides last met at Ibrox in a Scottish Cup tie six years ago andMorton gave a good account of themselves in a 2-1 defeat. Morton's last win over Rangers came in 1988 and their last success at Ibrox was in 1981.

Players to watch

Sam Lammers was only a sub in Switzerland and although he's not been entirely convicning so far, he could be of interest to score anytime at 6/4 with bet365 as he could start.

Robbie Muirhead has scored in both the league games for Ton this season and takes penalties for the Greenock side. He is 13/2 to score anytime on Saturday.

Anything else catch the eye?

Although Rangers should get the job done, you can't help wondering if Morton are being seriously disrespected here.

Dougie Imrie has done a fine job and will have done his homework here against a Rangers side that is likely to be rotated severely.

And they can breach a Rangers backline that still looks insecure here. Both teams to score and a Rangers win is a chunky 14/5 with BetVictor.

Morton should be able to cover the handicap if nothing else and with a three-goal start they can be backed with Ladbrokes at 4/6.

Also keep an eye out for the corners markets when they come up – Rangers aren't getting as many and are conceding more this season.
