One of the standout fixtures from the latest set of Champions League fixtures sees Paris-Saint Germain play host to Manchester City at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night.
Among the favourites to lift the trophy before a ball was kicked, the heavyweight duo are remarkably running the risk of missing out on a place in the knockout-stage.
Ahead of matchday seven, PSG are currently housed outside of the top 24 in the league phase standings, though they did defeat RB Salzburg 3-0 away from home last month.
On the domestic front, Luis Enrique’s side increased their lead at the top of Ligue 1 over the weekend after claiming a 2-1 win away at Lens.
Meanwhile, Man City have taken just one point from their last three Champions League assignments, a return that has left them in 22nd spot and with work still to do ahead of their final two league phase fixtures.
Following a turbulent end to 2024, City’s mini-revival continued with a 6-0 savaging of Ipswich on Sunday, in a game that brought up one of my Portman Road plays.
How the bookies view it: PSG to prevail
The bookmakers are struggling to separate the pair, with PSG marginal 11/8 favourites on Boylesports.
A point apiece at the Parc des Princes has been priced up at 11/4 on Boylesports, while Man City are narrow outsiders at 8/5 with the same oddsmaker.
Head to head: History against the hosts
These two behemoths have become somewhat familiar foes over the last decade or so. The two teams have previously crossed paths on six occasions in the Champions League, with Man City triumphing in four of those tussles.
Players to watch: Dembele to deliver?
Ousmane Dembele has scored six times across his last four appearances for PSG in all competitions. The French forward is as big as 11/4 on Boylesports for an anytime strike on Wednesday night and that looks a touch too big.
Similarly, Phil Foden has been in fine form for Man City of late, making him an appealing option to make the net bulge this midweek at 3/1 on Boylesports.
Predicted line-ups
PSG will be unable to call upon the services of new signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia until the knockout round should they make it that far. Luis Enrique also looks set to be without the injured Marquinhos.
Nathan Ake missed out at Ipswich on Sunday with an injury, making the Dutchman a major doubt for this blockbuster battle.
PSG: Donnarumma; Hakimi, Pacho, Hernandez, Mendes; Zaire-Emery, Vitinha, Neves; Dembele, Ramos, Barcola
Man City: Ederson; Nunes, Dias, Akanji, Gvardiol; Kovacic; Foden, Silva, De Bruyne, Doku; Haaland
Anything else catch the eye?
Given that both teams are still in need of points going into the final two rounds of league phase action, I’m more than happy to propose a play on both teams to score and over 2.5 goals at 4/5 on Boylesports.
This bet would have proven profitable in PSG’s most recent Champions League home game, not to mention it would have also been the correct selection in five of their nine Ligue 1 matches in front of their own supporters this season.
What’s more, the same bet would have also landed in two of Man City’s last three continental contests, both of which broke the over 4.5 goal barrier.
