Iran vs New Zealand

, KO: 02:00 , SoFi Stadium
New Zealand

Iran and New Zealand meet at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Sunday evening as both sides begin their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaigns in Group G.

For Iran, this tournament represents another opportunity to finally break through the group stage barrier after six previous World Cup appearances. New Zealand arrive with a very different objective.

The All Whites are making only their third World Cup appearance and their first since 2010, when they famously exited unbeaten after drawing all three group matches. Both nations know the importance of a positive start, particularly with tougher assignments still to come later in the group.

Iran's qualification campaign was largely straightforward. Amir Ghalenoei's side secured their place in North America with games to spare and once again demonstrated why they remain one of Asia's most consistent international teams.

The preparation for this tournament has been far from ideal, though. Ongoing political tensions between Iran and the United States have forced Team Melli to base themselves in Mexico rather than alongside other competing nations, creating additional travel demands throughout the competition.

Several members of the squad also arrive lacking recent competitive action after domestic football in Iran was suspended earlier this year. Despite those challenges, Iran remain a disciplined and experienced outfit. They are difficult to break down, physically strong throughout the spine of the team and possess enough attacking quality to trouble most opponents at this level.

New Zealand's route to the World Cup was considerably less demanding. Darren Bazeley's side won all five qualifying matches and conceded only once, but the standard of opposition leaves significant questions unanswered. Victories against the likes of Samoa, Vanuatu, Fiji and New Caledonia offer little indication of how the All Whites will cope against stronger opposition on the world's biggest stage.

Those concerns were heightened by results during the June international window. New Zealand lost four of their last five matches before the tournament, conceding nine goals during that period and struggling badly for attacking output.

A 1-0 defeat to England looked respectable on the scoreboard but the underlying numbers told a different story, with the All Whites generating very little attacking threat throughout the contest.

The expectation here is that New Zealand will adopt a compact defensive shape, sit deep without possession and attempt to make the game as physical and awkward as possible. Chris Wood remains their primary attacking outlet, particularly from crosses, corners and set-piece situations. Whether that approach is enough against an Iranian side with considerably more international pedigree remains to be seen.

How the bookies view it

Iran are priced at 86/100, implying a 53.8% probability of victory. New Zealand are available at 4/1, implying 20%, while the draw is 13/5, implying 27.8%.

The market expects a relatively low-scoring contest. Over 2.5 goals is available at 11/8, implying a 42.1% probability, while the bookmakers make under 2.5 goals the favoured outcome.

Head to head: First meeting

This will be the first meeting between Iran and New Zealand.

Player to watch: Mehdi Taremi to main threat for Iran

Iran will look to Mehdi Taremi for inspiration once again.

The experienced striker remains the focal point of Iran's attack and arrives at the tournament following an excellent qualifying campaign. Across 15 qualifiers he scored 10 goals and registered seven assists, directly contributing to 17 goals in just 1,329 minutes. That equates to a goal involvement every 78 minutes.

His efficiency stands out even more when examining the underlying numbers. Taremi recorded 32 shots during qualifying, 15 of which hit the target. He also won three penalties, converted two and created numerous opportunities for teammates through intelligent movement and link-up play.

With Sardar Azmoun no longer leading the line, even greater responsibility falls on Taremi's shoulders. His ability to occupy centre-backs, bring others into play and finish chances makes him Iran's most important player by some distance.

New Zealand's likely central defensive pairing of Finn Surman and Michael Boxall are experienced and well organised, but they have rarely faced a striker operating at Taremi's level. If Iran are to secure the three points, their number nine is the player most likely to make the difference.

Predicted line-ups

Iran 4-3-3: Beiranvand; Yousefi, Khalilzadeh, Nemati, Mohammadi; Ezatolahi, Mohebi, Ghoddos; Ghayedi, Taremi, Hosseinzadeh.

New Zealand 4-2-3-1: Crocombe; Payne, Boxall, Surman, Cacace; Stamenic, Bell; Garbett, Singh, Just; Wood.

Anything else catch the eye?

Iran to win and under 2.5 goals stands out.

While Iran possess greater quality across the pitch, they are not a side that typically overwhelm opponents with attacking football. Ghalenoei has built a team around defensive structure, organisation and control. They are comfortable winning matches by narrow margins and rarely take unnecessary risks once ahead.

That profile aligns closely with New Zealand's likely approach. The All Whites are expected to defend in numbers, keep their shape and focus almost entirely on limiting damage. Their recent attacking numbers offer little encouragement. They have scored in only one of their last five matches and generated very few clear-cut opportunities against stronger opposition.

Iran should enjoy the majority of possession and create the better chances. New Zealand are likely to remain competitive for long periods but may struggle to generate enough attacking threat to seriously test the Iranian defence.

Everything points towards a controlled Iranian performance rather than an open contest. If Taremi can convert one of the opportunities that comes his way, a 1-0 or 2-0 victory looks the most plausible outcome.
