Everton vs Liverpool

, KO: 12:30 Dec 7, 2024, Goodison Park
Liverpool

There's always a lot at stake whenever Everton and Liverpool collide but this clash is extra special as Goodison Park prepares to host what should be its final Merseyside derby.

Unless these teams are paired together in the FA Cup this season, a line will be drawn under 133 years of history in a game that has huge significance at both ends of the Premier League table.

Liverpool remain red-hot favourites for the title despite Wednesday's 3/3 draw with Newcastle, which saw two bets land for me, allowing their rivals to close the gap to seven points.

On the same night Everton roared back to life with a 4-0 win over Wolves but they are still among the contenders for the drop as they sit just five points clear of the drop zone.

Sean Dyche has done well to keep Everton in the top flight over the past couple of seasons amidst chaotic scenes behind the scenes at boardroom level.

A brighter future awaits the Toffees at their new stadium but another defeat in the derby would increase the chances of the new ground hosting its first game in the Championship.

How the bookies view it: No last hurrah for Everton

With both teams in contrasting form, it's no surprise to see Liverpool as the 2/5 hot favourites with Kwiff. Everton are 21/5 outsiders for an emotional victory and the draw pays 3/1.

Recent head to head: Sticky times for the Toffees

Everton won the last derby with a 2-0 Goodison Park triumph back in April but their recent record in this fixture has been woeful, with just two wins in the last 30 meetings.

Players to watch: All Dwight on the night?

Dwight McNeill has played more centrally this season for Everton and is a goal threat with his long-range shooting. The former Burnley star is 24/5 at Kwiff for anytime scorer while Bet365 price him at 12/5 to either score or assist, which is a decent option with his set-piece delivery.

Mo Salah has a good record in the Merseyside derby, netting seven times against the Toffees. After two goals and an assist in midweek, he's just 41/50 at Kwiff for anytime scorer but backing him to break the deadlock pays 27/10.

Probable line-ups

Dyche remains without summer signing Tim Iroegbunam and James Garner but striker Armando Broja made a welcome return off the bench against Wolves.

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister misses out after picking up one yellow card too many. Defenders Connor Bradley, Ibrahima Konate and Kostas Tsimikas are still sidelined while this game could also come too soon for Alisson, Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa as they step up their recoveries.

Everton: Pickford, Young, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko, Doucoure, Gueye, Mangala, McNeil, Ndiaye, Calvert-Lewin.

Liverpool: Kelleher, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson, Gravenberch, Jones, Gakpo, Szoboszlai, Salah, Diaz.

Anything else catch the eye?

Passions will be higher than usual for Goodison derby farewell so this promises to be a busy night for the officials. Over 52.5 booking points looks good at 6/4 with Betfred but there's probably more value in backing certain players to go into the book.

Toffees left-back Vitaly Mykolenko looks good value at 4/1 with Bet365 to go into the book as he's likely to be up against the lively Salah. Ryan Gravenberch will be at the heart of the midfield battle for Liverpool and he's 7/2 to go in the book.

Both derbies last term were littered with corners, with 16 at Anfield and 17 in the clash at Goodison, so over 11.5 flag kicks is appealing at 11/8 with Bet365. Liverpool won 12-4 and 13-4 on the corner count in those two games so look decent value at -3 in that handicap here, which pays evens with Bet365.
