Celtic vs LazioUEFA Champions League, KO: 20:00 Oct 4, 2023, Parkhead
CELTIC aim to end a ten-year hoodoo on Wednesday when they welcome Lazio to Parkhead for a Champions League showdown.
The Hoops last won a home match in the group stages in 2013 against Ajax and although they have previously taken the scalps of the likes of Barcelona, Manchester United, Lyon and Benfica, a home win at a ground hyped up as a fortress is well overdue.
In fact since that win against Ajax, they have lost seven out of nine of their home games in the group stages, but they have a real chance of ending that on Wednesday against a flakey Lazio side.
Brendan Rodgers' men got the perfect boost by grabbing a winner in the 97th minute at the weekend at Motherwell in a dramatic ending to the game, after Well had qualised two minutes earlier.
If Celtic have any ambitions of getting out of this group or at the very least getting third place and moving into the Europa League, they have to win after losing in Feyenoord in their opening game where they had two players sent off.
But Lazio appear to be a side in crisis. They have lost four of their seven Serie A games this season and manager Maurizio Sarri launched a blast at fixture scheduling. The Rome giants don't appear to be in a happy place.
How the bookies view it
Recent head to heads
Celtic beat Lazio home and away when they met in the Europa League four years ago both by 2-1 wins.
Players to watch
Matt O'Riley celebrated his new four-year deal at Celtic with his fifth goal of the season in Saturday and the soon-to-be Danish international has been a huge threat this season. He is a tempting 6/1 to score anytime with UniBet.
Ciro Immobile was only named on the bench for Lazio's 2-0 defeat at AC Milan at the weekend after a slight knock, but should be fit enough to start on Wednesday. The Italy star is 7/5 to score anytime with bet365.
Anything else catch the eye?
Celtic won't get a better chance of winning a home Champions League game against an out-of-sorts Lazio side and can add to their frustration with a win.
The Hoops will face a side who won't sit in for a change and that could suit their creative players like Reo Hatate to thrive.
Back them to outgun Lazio.
There should be goals in this game. Celtic's central defensive pairing is likely to be Liam Scales and Nat Phillips and that's a concern. Celtic give teams opportunities and that could lead to goals. Take a stab on over 3.5 goals at 2/1 with William Hill.
