Having both fallen short at the continental play-off stage of 2026 World Cup qualifying, Cameroon and Gabon meet in their opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with each side eager to lift the mood after that setback.
The Indomitable Lions are one of AFCON’s most storied nations, having lifted the trophy five times, with only Egypt (seven) claiming more titles. The Panthers, meanwhile, are making their ninth appearance at the tournament and are hoping to progress beyond the quarter-finals for the first time in their history.
Cameroon arrive at this AFCON amid extraordinary administrative turmoil, with an ongoing power struggle between head coach Marc Brys and federation president Samuel Eto’o reaching an almost farcical climax earlier this month.
That dispute led to conflicting squad lists being submitted to CAF, alongside public disagreements over the legitimacy of the coaching set-up – far from ideal preparation for a nation accustomed to competing at the highest level on the continent.
In the aftermath of that chaos, David Pagou has been handed the unenviable task of restoring stability from the dugout, and he must somehow insulate his players from the political noise and refocus attention on the task at hand.
The pressure is significant, particularly given Cameroon’s recent AFCON record has been surprisingly modest for a five-time champion, advancing beyond the round of 16 just once in their last three appearances.
Gabon, for their part, come into the tournament keen to shake off their tag as perennial underachievers, having often been overlooked when Africa’s elite are discussed.
They will, however, embrace the underdog role in a demanding group that also includes continental heavyweights Ivory Coast.
History has not been especially kind to the Panthers, who have exited at the group stage in five of their eight previous AFCON appearances, but there is a renewed sense of belief within the squad.
Prior to a narrow defeat to Nigeria in the World Cup play-offs, Gabon had put together an impressive five-match unbeaten run (4W, 1D), and they also boast an intriguing habit of starting tournaments strongly.
Indeed, the Panthers have not lost an AFCON opening fixture since the turn of the millennium, a run stretching back more than two decades.
How the bookies view it: Cameroon edges it but its mostly balanced
Bookmakers make Cameroon slight favourites at 6/5 with bet365, reflecting faith in their tournament pedigree, though not enough to suggest outright control of the contest.
The draw is attractively priced at 2/1 on bet365, pointing towards expectations of a tight, tactical encounter, while Gabon are priced at 11/4. Those odds suggest they remain capable of causing an upset if Cameroon fail to assert themselves, underlining a cautiously balanced matchup overall.
Recent head-to-head: Indomitable Lions dominance
The last meeting between these sides came at AFCON 2017, when the match ended goalless.
Overall, however, Cameroon have dominated the fixture, winning 12 of the 25 previous encounters, with Gabon claiming just three victories.
Player to watch: Bryan Mbeumo
The Manchester United summer signing has scored seven goals for the Red Devils this season ahead of AFCON, and he has also been directly involved in goals in each of Cameroon’s last three competitive victories, scoring twice and providing two assists.
Probable line-ups
Cameroon’s squad selection has been shrouded in controversy due to the ongoing coaching dispute.
Once the dust settled, several high-profile names were left out, including Andre Onana, Vincent Aboubakar, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui.
Gabon, meanwhile, will be without talisman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang due to injury, placing the spotlight firmly on in-form Los Angeles FC forward Denis Bouanga.
Cameroon: Epassy; Tchamadeu, Wooh, Boyomo, Tolo; Onana, Baleba; Mbeumo, Dina Ebimbe, Nkoudou; Magri
Gabon: Mbaba; Oyono, Ecuele Manga, Appindangoye, Ekomie; Ndong, Lemina; Bouanga, Kanga, Allevinah; Openda
Anything else that catches the eye?
Only two of Cameroon’s last nine matches have seen both teams score, while just one of the last five meetings between these sides has produced goals at both ends, making a ‘both teams to score – no’ option an appealing angle.
Cameroon are also unbeaten in their last five AFCON opening matches (2W, 3D), suggesting backing them to avoid defeat could be a sensible approach.
