Benfica play host to Sporting Lisbon on Friday night looking for the win that would move them level on points with their second-placed opponents in the Primeira Liga table.
While Benfica have been playing catch-up since the arrival of Jose Mourinho in September, they remain unbeaten in their 12 Portuguese top-flight fixtures.
Meanwhile, Sporting make the trip to Estadio da Luz for the Derby de Lisboa looking to keep pace with leaders Porto, who remain three points clear of the defending champions in the standings.
How the bookies see it: Can Benfica, Sporting be split?
Most bookmakers will find it difficult to determine an overwhelming favourite for this contest with Benfica priced by Bet365 at 29/20
Sporting Lisbon are marginally wider betting odds at 17/10, with the draw on offer at 9/4.
With Benfica unbeaten at Estadio da Luz in the league and Sporting boasting a 100% record in away fixtures, it is easy to see why.
Head to head: Benfica with slender advantage
As the bookmakers odds suggest, this fixture has been fiercely competitively over the years, with Benfica recording 21 wins in the last 53 encounters in comparison to 16 victories for Sporting Lisbon.
When these teams met in the Portuguese Super Cup at the start of the season, Benfica prevailed by a 1-0 scoreline, but they were winless in the previous seven fixtures (D3 L4).
However, across normal time, the last three head-to-heads have finished by a 1-1 scoreline, while the most recent six encounters have featured three goals or fewer.
Players to watch: Pavlidis vs. Suarez
Benfica forward Vangelis Pavlidis has been one of the standout players in this division during 2025-26, contributing 10 goals and three assists from 1,001 minutes in Portugal's top flight.
However, with just two strikes and one assist from his last five outings in all competitions, the Greece international's strike-rate has dropped off of late.
Aside from a hat-trick against Arouca, he has not netted more than once in a game since September 26.
Luis Suarez (nine) and Pedro Goncalves (eight) have scored 17 of Sporting's 31 goals in this season's Primeira Liga.
That said, Suarez is more likely to start than his playmaking teammate, particularly when he has netted three times in the last two games against Club Brugge and Estrela da Amadora.
Probable lineups:
Andreas Schjelderup and Gianluca Prestianni are both pushing to start for Benfica after chipping in with an assist and goal as substitutes in the dramatic last-gasp 2-1 win at Nacional.
However, it is Richard Rios who is most likely to return to the midfield after serving a one-match suspension.
Meanwhile, Ousmane Diomande should return to the Sporting defence as a replacement for Eduardo Quaresma.
Goncalves will also expect to feature as an alternative for Geny Catamo or Geovany Quenda, but Rui Borges has options ahead of this contest.
Benfica: Trubin; Dedic, Silva, Otamendi, Dahl; Rios, Barrenechea; Aursnes, Barreiro, Sudakov; Pavlidis
Sporting Lisbon: Silva; Fresneda, Diomande, Inacio, Araujo; Hjulmand, Morita; Catamo, Trincao, Goncalves; Suarez
Anything else catch the eye?
While Benfica are on a three-match winning streak in all competitions, each of those victories came on their travels.
Three draws have been recorded in six outings at Estadio Da Luz, including the last such contest when they drew 2-2 with 15th-placed Casa Pia.
Sporting have scored 14 times in their six away Primeira Liga fixtures, winning each game and conceding just three goals. However, they are yet to play any of the so-called “big four”.
A 19-game scoring streak has been put together by Sporting since they lost 1-0 to Benfica in the Portuguese Super Cup.
