Belgium vs Poland

, KO: 19:45 Jun 8, 2022, Stade Roi Baudouin
Poland

Belgium will be seeking a quick reaction after beginning their UEFA Nations League campaign with a shock home defeat. Poland are up next in Group A4 and the Belgians could once again be in for a difficult time against another tricky opponent.

Belgium were far from their best in their opening fixture in the UEFA Nations League as they suffered a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Netherlands. They were second best throughout the contest and went four goals down before Michy Batshuayi struck a consolation deep into added time.

Taking a closer look at Belgium's recent form, the defeat to Netherlands may not be all that surprising as they have found things difficult lately. They have claimed just two wins from their last seven matches, with losses to Italy and France among the results in that run while they were also held to draws by Wales and Republic of Ireland.

However, the Belgians may choose to view the result in the opening fixture as a blip as they generally tend to do their best work in front of their fans. Roberto Martinez’s men had claimed three straight wins on home soil prior to the defeat to Netherlands.

In contrast to Belgium’s struggles, Poland were in fine form in their opening fixture as they claimed a 2-1 victory over Wales. They fought back from a goal down with efforts Jakub Kaminski and Karol Swiderski earning them the win.

The result is an extension of Poland’s fine form since crashing out in the second round of last year’s European Championship. Czeslaw Michniewicz’s men have suffered just one defeat in their last 11 matches across all competitions, claiming seven wins in that run.

The Poles have also maintained a solid record on their recent travels and are unbeaten in their last four away matches. They have claimed three wins in that run but were held to a 1-1 draw by Scotland in their previous fixture away from home.

How the bookies view it

Despite the disappointment in their opening fixture, Belgium are still considered overwhelming favourites among the bookies at 13/19 with SBK. A victory for Poland is valued at 9/2 by Coral while a draw is set at odds of 29/10 by SBK.

Head to head

Poland have a 5-2 advantage with three draws from 10 previous matches with Belgium. Both teams last faced each other during the Euro 2008 qualifiers with the Poles claiming a 1-0 victory in Belgium before returning home for a 2-0 win.

Players to watch

Striker Michy Batshuayi is likely to continue in place of the injured Romelu Lukaku and is priced at 7/4 by Paddy Power to once again find the net. Kevin De Bruyne also carries a major attacking threat and could be backed at 23/10 with Paddy Power to get on the score sheet.

As always Poland will look to Robert Lewandowski to provide the spark in attack despite failing to get on the score sheet last time out against Wales. The striker rarely goes on lengthy droughts and could be backed to be get among the goals on Wednesday at 9/5 with Paddy Power.

Anything else catch the eye?

Given the attacking quality likely to be on display, goals can be expected on Wednesday. Both teams could be backed to score at 21/20 with William Hill, over 2.5 goals can also be considered at 15/16 with SBK, who are offering odds of 27/11 for over 3.5 goals.

Wednesday’s clash is likely to be a closely fought encounter which means a halftime draw is a possibility at 6/5 with bet365.
