ASTON VILLA were turned over in the first leg of the Capital One Cup but are still favourites to reach Wembley at the expense of League Two Bradford.

Paul Lambert's men were beaten 3-1 but are no bigger than 11-10 with the likes of Paddy Power and Ladbrokes to qualify for the Final.

To have a chance Villa must score first and can make up the deficit if they perform like they did in the first half at West Brom last weekend.

Of course there are question marks over their defence but the return of Dutch centre-half Ron Vlaar from injury is massive and my gut feeling is that Villa will do it – either in 90 minutes or in extra time.

To win on the night Villa are no bigger than 2-5 at Coral and you can understand why as at the end of the day it's a Premier League team against one from three leagues below.

Christian Benteke missed chance after chance at Valley Parade but showed his true colours at the Hawthorns with a sublime strike and he's 4-1 at boylesports, William Hill and Skybet to score first.

Bradford could have netted more at home and that must be a worry for Villa and you can have 5-6 at Skybet on both teams to score while bet365 go 4-7 for the tie to produce more than two goals. Ladbrokes will refund losing first-scorer bets on the game if Bradford score first.

To qualify the Bantams are 4-5 at Stan James and 15-2 at William Hill to win on the night.

To win the Capital One Cup Ladbrokes go 1-1 Swansea, 11-4 Chelsea, 7-2 Aston Villa and 7-1 Bradford.

Recommendations

Villa to qualify
(11-10, Paddy Power, Ladbrokes)

Benteke to score first
(4-1, boylesports, William Hill, Skybet)

Big Jock, I see your Lisburn vs Portadown match in the Irish league is being played Tuesday night. You still confident of an upset here, Lisburn 11/2 at home. This was your big tip last week before the game got postponed.

Paul, Charlie Mulgrew is well overdue a goal, don’t you think? 11/2 anytime with William Hill.

Chris, just watched the highlights and Mulgrew came close. Probably is due one although I hate that phrase. Should be a few goals but it’s hard to look past Hooper for first goal on current form.

Charlie Mulgrew not scored in his last 14 games. Last goal was against Aberdeen on 17th November.

I think Villa are going to get a few tomorrow night, only 1O/3 on paddy power to net 4 or more, bad odds really but considering they have to go for it it’s not TOO bad

    • Avatar of Mr Fixit
      Mr Fixit 12 years ago

John, i think Villa will do it but they must score first and probably fairly early. If they don’t crowd will start to get on their backs. I hope Bradford don’t just park the bus. if they attack Villa could cause them more problems.

problem is I fancy Bradford to get atleast a goal leavimg Villa needing 3 just to take it to extra time, the way they have been playing I dont expect it. Bradford know a huge 90mins will get them to the wembely. massive incentive to do it.

Im taking Bradford to reach the final

    • Avatar of Mr Fixit
      Mr Fixit 12 years ago

Stevie H, it’s a tough one really. At the end of the day Villa only need to win 2-0 to force extra time so they shouldn’t be panicking early on. But if they concede first they are in serious trouble. Also I’m sure Bradford will try to attack because if they simply sit deep they’ll be picked off eventually.

i thought villa only need to win 2-0 to qualify rather than just force extra time? because of the away goal? the only way it reaches extra time is if the score is 3-1 villa

    • Avatar of Milesey
      Milesey 12 years ago

I thought away goals don’t count in the capital cup ? not till after extra time does the away goals rule apply.

    • Avatar of Milesey
      Milesey 12 years ago

I meant away goals don’t count within 90minutes of capital cup games, the rule is only applied after extra time, if no winner then it’s penalties.

    • Avatar of Mr Fixit
      Mr Fixit 12 years ago

Madi, 2-0, 3-1 or 4-2 will force extra time. Away goals only count after extra time in the League Cup.

I fancy villa if they start well to beat Bradford comfortably.they should have been 2 up in the 1st game before Bradford scored! Villa -1 for me tonight and fancy benteke or weimann 1st goal!

    • Avatar of Mr Fixit
      Mr Fixit 12 years ago

Peter, for me it’s all about how Villa start as you say. Started well against West Brom on Saturday and on form have the players who can hurt Bradford. Could be a fascinating tie and I’d love to see Bradford do it but it’s in the balance. First goal will be so crucial.

Don’t mean any offence to you or anyone else on here mrfixit but honestly ………….ok I’ll leave it as there would be a slanging match with only my comments being deleted.good site btw….I think villa will give themselves a much needed boost tha night.can see them winning comfortably against a team 3 leagues below them who have been looking a little weary of late. Confident of them banging in a few.

I’m going big on villa tonight. Hoping Bradford don’t screw me over again like they did against arsenal In QF
Looking at odds for anyone looking at villa to qualify would it not be safer to go with -1 handicap instead. They have to win by at least 2 to have chance and at least it takes away any risk if it goes to extra time. They could win by 2 then still go out. I got on the handicap at 11/10 on skybet this morning but notice its now been cut to 10/11 which is now same odds as to qualify.

Since the games you ave pointed out smilesey bradford have been poor, probably the amount of games theyve been involved in recently has had a catch up effect on them, havent won in 5 lg 2 games, hammered by the mighty CREWE 4-1 in the tin of paint trophy last time ooot, can point to their victory over villa in previous leg but villa have been showing improvements lately and can see tonight as a game tey can use to kick start their season…oh congratulations SMILEsey on today tipping a horse in a 3 horse race that managed to come in………..3rd :)…only 1 winner out of your tips today, ill say nae more :)Cut your losses and get on villa -2 11/5, aye i know you prefer less than evens but its better than an evens money donkey coming last in a 3 horse race ;)

Shay Given replaces Brad Guzan in goal, while Stephen Ireland and Barry Bannan come into the side, with Nathan Baker and Ashley Westwood making way.

Meanwhile, Bradford manager Phil Parkinson keeps faith with the same starting 11 that secured the 3-1 first-leg win at Valley Parade earlier this month.
