IT was a super Sunday as my 25-1 tip Paul Casey won the KLM Open at the weekend then hours later Mr Fixit's 25-1 pick for the Tour Championship, Billy Horschel, also took the honours.
That would have been some double and I wish I'd backed it. This week the Tour moves to Celtic Manor, the last European venue to host the Ryder Cup, and four participants next week at Gleneagles are taking part – Jamie Donaldson, Stephen Gallacher, Thomas Bjorn and Lee Westwood.
Unfortunately I don’t see any of them winning this week as they’ll be honing their skills of the battle against the USA, although Donaldson, playing his home Open, might be near the top at the leaderboard.
There are two or three players who catch my eye with their form over the past three or four tournaments. First is Joost Luiten, who finished T5 in the KLM last week and in the Open D’Italia before that he was T4. In both tournaments he didn’t hit over a 70 and that is steady golf.
In the stats his driving accuracy is over 61 per cent, GIR over 67 per cent and average putts per round is 29.46, his lowest in six years. Looks a good bet.
Next is Simon Dyson who gave Casey a run for his money last week. After missing the cut at the D+D REAL Czech Masters he has put in eight steady rounds with a T7 at the Open D’Italia and the 2nd at the KLM.
His GIR is standing at 71.87 and average putts per round is below 30 although his driving accuracy is down at 60.7. I quite like Dyson – he’s a gutsy wee player and well worth a place bet.
One man who really has hit some form in the last three tournaments is Richie Ramsey. Three weeks ago he had a T4 in Italy and followed that up with an eighth and T9 in the last two weeks. In those three tournaments he only had one over-par round.
His driving accuracy is 62% but GIR is over 70% and his average putts are below 70. I expect at least a top-five finish this week so definitely an eachway bet.
Three top-five finishes out of his last four tournaments for Eddie Pepperell has turned his season around. This season has not been that good for the 23-year-old but going on his last few outings he looks like he’s back in the groove. I’m taking a small wager on him eachway.
