The opener at Plumpton was one of those races were the field allowed the front runner to go 15/20 lengths clear for most of the race and it ended up being a dash a fair way from home to see who could get to the long term leader and unfortunately my selection yesterday couldn't land a blow.
I'm a firm believer that unless a jockey knows he's got a good bit of horse underneath him and knows his mount is proven stamina wise that he or she should never allow a front runner to have that much ground on them, well in my opinion anyway…
Monday is a new day and I've gone to Kelso for my sole selection.
Your Own Story 5/2 – Kelso 15:30
My selection Your Own Story finished sixth in last years Scottish National and with this years happening this coming Saturday I was surprised to see connections opt to run him here instead. With that being said I think the decision from connections to run here is a clue in itself and they clearly fancy their chances in what looks a more than winnable opportunity for Lucinda Russells 8 year old.
Your Own Story is still a lightly raced horse and with proven stamina being his main asset he should take all the beating in this contest of a mark of 126.
He was off the track for just under a year before making his return to racing at Newcastle last month where he finished second in a small three runner field. Small runner fields tend to become tactical and jockey Derek Fox got his tactics all wrong on the day. He attempted to turn the race into a sprint which was a baffling decision given conditions were heavy and the horse was only coming back from a layoff. I'm more than happy to draw a line through that effort and the run should of blown away any cobwebs coming into this.
Too quickly touch on the remainder of the field. Charlie Uberalles is a horse I like but is becoming one of those who fires hot and cold having won once, placed twice and pulled up twice on his previous 5 runs. Prince Des Fichaux tends to be there or thereabouts without getting his head in-front whilst No Risk Des Flos still has to prove his stamina over this sort of trip having faded into fourth at Sandown last time out on his first try over 3m.
