Sunday was an awful day for the three selections put up.

When a day like that happens, you've got to put your hands up and say it got it completely wrong, which I definitely did.

The two runners in France didn't cover themselves in glory.

The Haggas horse was backed into 6/4F. She was given a hard task running from the rear under Soumillon. He decided to take closer orders before the final bend, but used up a lot of petrol, as she had nothing left when asked.

Norwalk Havoc was dreadful, and didn't go a single yard. He couldn't dominate, and I think he threw in the towel.

Venetia's horse on its chasing debut jumped well, but got tired late in the race. We'll get our money back on him when he next runs, as long as I remember.

Steel Ally 13/8 (2pt) – Carlisle 2.15

Sam Thomas has continued his lightning-fast start to the new season. He has managed to accumulate six winners from twelve runners, a lot of them winning first time out.

In the last fortnight, he has had nine runners, seeing him get five winners, equalling a strike rate of 56%.

His runners that have gone over fences for their chasing debuts have been very good, so it doesn't put me off from backing Steel Ally on his chasing debut at short odds.

This is a nice pot, and given that Sam Thomas has a very good strike rate at Carlisle (5 wins from 8), there's no doubt in my mind that Steel Ally will be ready first time out.

His form over hurdles in the last couple of seasons gives him every chance of being a very talented chaser. He was second to ownermate, Lump Sum, last October. That horse has made a fantastic transition to chasing, winning with ease at Uttoxeter the other week.

To add to his already attractive profile, he is in receipt of 11lbs from every other horse in this race, making it a difficult task for the rest.

I don't think this will be a walk in the park, as there are some useful horses turning up.

Path d'Oroux comes over from Ireland, but he is highly tested and has one win from sixteen attempts over fences. Unexpected Party is another who has to be respected, but I think Dan Skelton will be looking to get his handicap mark lowered for the spring festivals.

Back it with Tote (no fixed odds)

Monday has some okay races, but nothing else stands out like a strong bet. After a disaster on Sunday, I'm going to keep it low-key for the start of the new week and have a 2pt win selection on the runner up at Carlisle.
