THERE'S a big field contending this week’s Joburg Open at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club but you wouldn’t call it a stellar cast.

The competition is played over the East and West Courses for the first two rounds before those who make the cut will fight it out over the East on the Saturday and Sunday. Although the two courses appear quite long (7228 yards on the West and 7677 yards on East) being at altitude the ball travels approximately 10 per cent further.

The only stat that is probably relevant for here is being a South African helps. Maybe GIR and form will also be worth looking at. With seven of the last 10 winners being South African it’s not surprising the betting list is top-loaded with the Springboks.

With that in mind and the fact his two wins have been on home soil I’m going for home boy Brandon Stone. He won the Alfred Dunhill at Leopard Creek in December and fully expect him to be pushing this weekend for top spot. With one win, a T7 this season from three outings and GIR of 76.85 per cent Stone is looking good.

At the end of January Jaco van Zyl finished T2 at the Qatar Masters and although he missed the cut at the Dubai Desert Classic the following week I’m putting that down to the horrendous weather that hit the Emirates Golf Club. So with his form looking good a GIR of 72.22 per cent and he is a South African what can go wrong?

    Ace,
Agree about S.Africans in this tournament, also stick with A.Otaegui for now, think he will eventually come good, probably when I back someone else !

Thanks for the heads up about Honda course, might have done Z.Johnson, but will give A.Lahiri another few chances, he is a very good golfer.

Good luck to everybody having a bet on the golf.
