THE first day of the Dell Matchplay could have gone better for Ace as outright picks Paul Casey and Rickie Fowler, lost their first matches but they have time to make it up today and tomorrow.
Emiliano Grillo had a great start to his match with JB Holmes, five up through seven with four birdies, but JB Holmes wasn’t having a great time hitting five bogeys in his first seven.
Holmes got back to three down by the 14th but that was as close he got. Today Grillo (Stan James, 19-10) takes on Bubba Watson and I can see the Argentine getting the better of the American.
Jason Dufner and Fowler put on a great show with Dufner three up after 11 and Fowler fighting back to all square after 15th. Dufner closed the match out with two consecutive birdies at the next two holes.
Group Five should have a couple of great matches today with Byeong Hun An taking on Dufner and Scott Piercy, after his great comeback from three down against An, up against Fowler. I think Dufner (bet365, 11-10) will just see off the South Korean.
Group Ten throws up an interesting match with Englishman Danny Willett facing American Billy Horschell. Willett had a mixed bag in his halved match with Jaco Van Zyl while Horschell let a three-hole lead after eight slip and finished up losing to Brooks Koepka 3&2. Can see this one finishing all square (Betfred, 6-1).
And remember with most bookies you can bet 1-2-x or go with a winner with the bet voided if it's a draw.
Group 16 throws up Englishman Andy Sullivan against Australian Matt Jones who lost 2&1 to Louis Oosthuizen. Sullivan (888Sport, evens) never trailed after the second hole in his match against Austrian Bernd Weisberger, winning 3&2, and hopefully will win this one too.
