The Championship returns with a busy midweek programme on Tuesday, and we have identified two fixtures where the underlying statistics point towards interesting betting opportunities.

Millwall welcome Swansea City to The Den in a meeting between two sides whose respective home and away performances have produced plenty of attacking football this season. Both teams have shown an ability to create chances, although their defensive records and the circumstances surrounding some recent results deserve closer examination.

Elsewhere, Birmingham City host Preston North End at St Andrew's, with the visitors looking to improve their consistency on the road. Birmingham's home performances have offered encouragement going forward, but their defensive numbers suggest there is still work to do.

With the Championship's unpredictable nature making outright results difficult to call, our latest selections focus on what the underlying data tells us about both fixtures, rather than simply following the league table.

Millwall vs Swansea

Millwall welcome Swansea City to The Den on Tuesday with both sides looking to build momentum in the Championship. The underlying numbers suggest this could be one of the more entertaining fixtures of the midweek programme, with goals featuring regularly in both teams' matches.

Millwall's four home league games have all produced at least three goals. The Lions have averaged 2.07 expected goals (xG) per home fixture, demonstrating their ability to create opportunities in front of their own supporters.

Their attacking output has translated into goals, with Millwall averaging 2.25 goals per home game. That provides a strong foundation for an Over 2.5 goals selection, particularly against opponents who have also been involved in high-scoring encounters.

Swansea arrive with an equally compelling away record. All four of their Championship matches on the road have finished with at least three goals, while the Swans have averaged 1.48 xG and scored 2.00 goals per away fixture.

The combination of Millwall's home attacking output and Swansea's ability to find the net on their travels makes the goals market appealing.

There is one important qualification. Three of Millwall's four home fixtures have involved red cards, which may have contributed to the unusually high scoring figures. Their perfect Over 2.5 record therefore needs treating with some caution.

Nevertheless, eight successful results from eight combined home and away fixtures, supported by the attacking numbers of both teams, make Over 2.5 goals at 10/11 my strongest Championship selection.

Birmingham vs Preston

Tuesday night sees Birmingham City host Preston North End at St Andrew's, with the visitors facing a Birmingham side whose home fixtures have consistently produced goals at both ends.

Rather than relying on one team's attacking strength, this selection is built around the combination of two defences that have struggled to keep opponents out.

Birmingham have played four Championship matches at home this season, and both teams have scored in every one. Their attacking performances have generated an average of 1.58 xG per game, but they have also conceded opportunities worth 1.64 xGA.

That balance is important. Birmingham are creating enough chances to threaten opponents, yet their defensive numbers suggest they remain vulnerable when possession changes hands. Preston's away record provides further encouragement. Both teams have scored in three of their four league fixtures on the road, with North End averaging 1.39 xG and allowing 1.81 xGA per away match.

Neither side has managed a clean sheet in the relevant home and away fixtures, reinforcing the defensive concerns highlighted by the expected-goals figures.

There is some risk attached to Preston's attacking consistency. They have failed to score in two of their latest four league matches overall, demonstrating that their away Both teams to score record does not guarantee another goal.

However, Birmingham's four consecutive home both teams to score results, Preston's three successful away outcomes and the defensive weaknesses on both sides provide a reasonable statistical case.

With both teams regularly creating and conceding chances, both teams to score at 3/4 is my second Championship selection for the midweek programme.
