ALASTAIR COOK's time as England Test captain could be nearing an end, according to Ladbrokes.
After losing the Test series to India with a match to spare, the bookies make it just 6-4 the Essex batsman stands down in 2017.
And according to the latest odds, Joe Root is the heir apparent with 1-10 saying the Yorkshireman becomes England's next permanent Test skipper.
The India series might not have gone England's way, but after the debuts of Keaton Jenings and Haseeb Hameed it's 5-1 and 8-1 respectively they eventually go on to captain the country.
