Racing tips: 10lb rise won’t stop the impressive lto winner William Ewart

Saturday was a tough day, with many underperforming, others jumping poorly and some bad rides mixed in there too.

I'm a big fan of Derek Fox, but I don't understand what his plan was in the big race. He lead the field jumping the first, so obviously wanted to be handy, but then let the horse drift through the field and he settled in last place for the entirety of the race, giving the horse no chance at all. Thankfully, he did place so we got our money back from the horse, but it just summed up my day that ride.

Stratford 3:15 – William Ewart 11/4 (1pt)

With my form being honking at the moment, I'm going to be playing it quite on Sunday and just playing a couple of horses with the first selection being William Ewart.

This lad was a winner a few weekends ago, landing a bit of a gamble for Christian Willaims when backed in from 10/1 to 4/1, and I thought that run was very good and he is more than capable of beating the rise in the weights. I thought that he was going to appreciate the step up to 2m 7f at Bangor, and it looked like a perfect decision to put him up in trip as he cruised to the lead and stayed on powerfully, winning with ease.

He's had a few weeks off the track so will have recharged his batteries for today's run, and now they are going up in trip again, which can mean we'll likely see more improvement. They are sticking to the theme of a tight track, as he did well at Bangor last time, so they've gone with Stratford which is a nippy track suited by handy types and the ground will have come in his favour too as there is a decent amount of rain expected which should turn the ground on soft side of good.

Stratford 3:45 – Fancy Stuff 4/1 (1pt)

I'm sure that Luna Dora will be popular in the betting for this race having won nicely on the handicap debut last time around and gets in this race off a low weight, but she has to prove she is better in a higher-graded race and against better opposition, which I think she might struggle with.

I like Fancy Stuff, trained by Dan Skelton and ridden by Bridget Andrews, here's hoping she gives this horse a better ride than she did on Frere D'Armes yesterday. This horse has a decent enough pedigree and one which should mean she should be better than her current handicap mark of 101. She is related to some decent types like Heath Hunter who was rated 132 in his pomp Oscar Wilde who was 118, with Pretty Reckless being the only one in the pedigree to grab black type.

Her form so far isn't terrible and it should give her a good chance of winning a race like this. The run behind Queens Rock now looks like good form with that mare winning nicely and now being rated 120 and then Fancy Stuff was behind Deere Mark and Gaelic Park who have both won since and are 123 rated and 119 rated, with the fourth in that race also being 119 rated.

I thought her run last time out at Warwick was good and can look better than her final position of 6th. She was held up from off the pace and looked to be cruising but she went from travelling to not travelling at all in a matter of strides, and that looked like she either didn't stay the 2m 3f or something was amiss, either way, she went through the race like a horse who was ahead of her mark and she deserves a chance of redemption, and the odds available are decent enough.
