5.30 Kim Muir Amateur Riders’ Handicap Chase
Thursday 12 March | Age: 5yo+ | Prize: £70,000
This is race bears the name of Kim Muir, a cavalry officer who died during World War II.
A STAYING chase handicap for amateur riders here and it’s a race that there tends to be plots and gambles in.
One such plot looks to be a fairly obvious one with LE BREUIL last year’s National Hunt Chase winner. He is ridden by Jamie Codd again and there is no other amateur jockey I would rather have in this race.
The horse has been campaigned very quietly and returns to the scene of his finest hour with a few pounds up his sleeve. He’ll do nicely for me. Most bookies paying 5 places so take advantage.
We have already had two great returns this week at big prices on horses finishing in the extra place.
Champagne Platinum is the main danger and has obvious chances as an unexposed novice chaser so don’t let me put you off him if you fancy him.
PLAN OF ATTACK (5.30) is another lining up under the de Bromhead banner with a great chance, this time in the Kim Muir Amateur Riders’ Handicap Chase.
The seven-year-old scored at Aintree over 3m 1f (soft) last season and ran a cracker in the Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown over Christmas, finishing third of 27 runners.
JP’s Fitzhenry finished just in front of my selection that day and is clearly a threat under Patrick Mullins, although early betting points to Champagne Platinum being the McManus No 1.
Ben Pauling has booked Jamie Codd to ride Le Breuil, last year’s National Hunt Chase winner, and Le Breuil has shown enough in slightly better class events this winter to indicate he’ll go close before taking a tilt at next month’s Grand National.
In these types of amateur races, it often pays dividends to back the horses who have the best jockeys, and arguably the best amateur jockey is Jamie Codd.
I think his ride, LE BREUIL, has a nice chance as he’s a thorough stayer and that is something, I think you’ll need in this race.
The last thing I want, is backing something which isn’t proven over the 3m 2f trip, and that’s why I couldn’t be confident in backing Champagne Platinum (even though I think this has been a long-term plan).
Le Breuil’s recent form doesn’t look impressive, the horses who beat him in the Warwick Classic Chase have either won or boosted the form in one way or another.
Kimberlite Candy won the race, and he looks to have a strong chance in the Grand National.
Captain Chaos finished second that day, and he’s since destroyed a field at Doncaster when winning by 54 lengths.
The Conditional finished fourth at Warwick and won the Ultimate yesterday (Was tipped up).
Overall the form is stacking up nicely and the booking of the Coddmaster looks very positive, he won on this horse last year in the NH Chase over 3m 7f. He might not have the speed of others, but you best believe he’ll power up the Cheltenham hill.
One I’d like to mention at big odds is MILITARIAN who must have a squeak if the wind surgery has worked. He’s got course form when finishing fourth on New years day, where he looked like a winner, but the tank emptied, so therefore I think the wind surgery could help him finish his races out better.
James Martin gets on very well with this horse and has won on him four times. If there’s no overnight rain, this will definitely benefit his chances. There’s definitely worse 40/1 shots you could back!
