JUVENTUS are likely to be almost as popular as Liverpool last night – and if they are bookies could be big winners again.

Neil Lennon’s men are back in the big time and Parkhead will be crackling for the Champions League last-16 visit of the Italians.

Italian champs Juventus are a class act but will give Celtic respect mainly because of their group-stage win against Barcelona.

Juve are odds on at a biggest 17-20 with bet365 and William Hill but Celtic took seven points from nine against Benfica, Barca and Spartak Moscow so they won’t give anyone an easy games.

So for me if Celtic can keep it tight at the back there is every chance of avoiding defeat and heading to Turin level for the second leg – and Juve will probably be quite happy with that as they’ll expect to beat the Scots at home.

Lennon’s men are 15-4 at BetVictor and bet365 and 21-20 with bet365 plus one.

Celtic haven’t lost a home match against an Italian side since 1969 and beat Juve 4-3 in their previous Champions League meeting.

Gary Hooper hit the opener against Barca and is 11-1 with unibet to strike the first again with Georgios Samaras is 14-1 with the same firm if he recovers from injury.

First-goal favourite for Juve is Mirko Vucinic who is 6-1 (various) while deadball expert Andrea Pirlo is always a threat and is 12-1 at BetVictor and Coral to break the deadlock.

The other tie tonight sees Valencia entertain Paris St Germain with the French club’s new boy David Beckham watching on.

Valencia are a class act in the Mestalla and are 7-5 favourites with William Hill and bet365 while PSG are 9-4 at bet365 and BetVictor.

The Spaniards are unbeaten in nine Champions League games at home while PSG conceded just three times in the group stage and have let in just one goal in their last nine in the French league.

It’s a tough test for the French champions but if they defend well without centre-half Thiago and Zlatan Ibrahimovic is inspired at the other end they can pick a draw at 2-1 with BetVictor.

Ibra is 11-2 (Coral) to score first while for Valencia dangerman Roberto Soldado is also 11-2 (William Hill

4 draws in CL first legs
(Yankee – 11 bets)

Celtic +1
(21-20, bet365)

Pirlo to score
(5-1, Coral, unibet)

Both to score at Valencia
(10-11, William Hill)

Neverwins, as you can see I like Yeovil and Hartlepool but not touching Doncaster. Both they and MK Dons have lost their last two so I’m not sure how it will go.

  10. callum g - teed 5 years ago

As much as it pains me to admit , i think celtic will win tonight . i thought they were very lucky to get out the group specially the last game were samaras dived to get them in the last 16

i have watched juventus this season and there not up to much . the reason i think they have done so well in serie A is there very unified which is unusual for an italian team .

even though celtic does not deserve to be there i still think they will win tonght . 2 – 1 to celtic

although i think juventus will qualify over the 2 legs . they have not won away in the champions leaague and bairly drew any apart from spartak and we all know what happened there . spartak 2 – 1 up were looking like it was going to be 4 -1 or 5 – 1 that night then there shaky cdentre half brought down hooper.

i think jueventus will win 3- 0 in the return fixture.

  11. callum g - teed 5 years ago

    oh yea

    2-1 celtic tonight

and i can see valencia and psg drawing 1-1 . i can almost see it beofre it happens

  12. Mr H 5 years ago

Calumn that is the biggest load of tosh I’ve read on these pages for a while. Celtic dont deserve to be there? Juventus arent upto much?

Lets start with Celtic not deserving to be there….having won 7 from 9 points at home including a 2-1 victory against the best footballing team on the planet. A tremendous 3-2 victory in Moscow, while being unlucky too lose too a late goal in the Nou Camp. I see your comment as ignorant and biased, let me guess your a Rangers man?

Juventus arent upto much? Defending Italian champions with 17 wins from 24 so far this season domestically and a backline that has conceded just 16 goals in 24 league games. Undefeated in CL group stages conceding only 4 goals in 6 games while scoring 12 times.

Your opinion is both inaccurate and laughable too say the least

  13. Mr H 5 years ago

Oh and Juventus won 1-0 away in Donetsk which in itself is a great result given Shaktars home record in the competition

    • Milesey 5 years ago

Lennon will give Georgios Samaras and Efe Ambrose every chance to be available for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash.

The Greece striker is battling to recover from a hamstring injury while Ambrose played for Nigeria in their Africa Cup of Nations final win over Burkina Faso on Sunday night and will not be back in Glasgow until the morning of the game.

Left-back Emilio Izaguirre has recovered from a knee injury while winger James Forrest is fit again following a hamstring problem.

Nicolas Anelka, Mirko Vucinic and Kwadwo Asamoah are included in a 22-man travelling squad for Juventus, but Paolo De Ceglie misses out with a thigh strain suffered in the 2-0 Serie A win over Fiorentina.

Vucinic also picked up a knock to his knee in that game but is in contention, while Asamoah is jetting straight to Scotland after being on international duty with Ghana.

Anelka has not yet made his debut for Juve after joining from Shanghai Shenhua on a six-month deal but offers a different attacking option.

      • Milesey 5 years ago

        Taken from other sites :

I’m of the opinion that Juventus are too short in this one. I don’t imagine Celtic will cause them masses of problems in this, but that will be down to their own approach as well as the home sides ability. A roaring atmosphere and pace/physicality is enough to ruffle a few feathers so I think Juventus will take a smart approach to this match. They have a superbly balanced midfield and excellent full-backs which will allow them to largely control the match. My main issue with their current price is that they don’t have bankable forwards. Vucinic is a great player but he cannot be relied upon. Giovinco and Matri, for different reasons, are not good enough for this elite level. Quagliarella is the best finisher from the bunch but Conte just doesn’t like playing him for some reason. It’s a toss up as to who partners Vucinic, but as a team they don’t convert enough chances to warrant a sub evens price in a match of this kind.

I do my best to avoid watching Celtic when I can so I don’t know their intricacies, but I have age old impressions of how they play etc. My play on this match will be under 2.5. Juve are a very physically able side and I think they will ably handle Celtic, while not being able to craft too many clear cut chances. I imagine Celtic are able to put up some defensive strength with bodies alone.

My feeling regarding Celtic+0.5 or Juve win would depend on who plays in LCB, LWB and CF for Juve. My preferred LCB is Caceres, while Asamoah is so impressive and safe at LWB that he alone would cover the recent defensive weakness down that side of the pitch. I’d view Juve’s attacking strength at its best with Quagliarella, then Matri, then Giovinco. Even at their best XI I’d be hard pressed to find value in the away win, but certain selection choices would make Celtic+0.5 serious value. I feel that Juve would take a draw but be hopeful of a narrow win, while Celtic will want a win, but know that an away goal for Juve would go a long way to ending their chances of qualification.

        Under 2.5 goals – 1.700 – 6 points
        CS – 0-0 – 9.00 – 0.5 points
        1-0 Juventus – 6.00 – 0.5 points

        Juventus 10/11 StanJames

I strongly fancy the Italians to defeat Celtic at Parkhead tomorrow night. It was a great achievement for Celtic to get out of their group but I feel they rode their luck in qualifying to the next stage. Against Benfica at home they barely mustered a shot on target and set up not to lose rather than go for victory, looking out of their depth in the process. They did extremely well in both games against Barcelona, but if it wasn’t for Fraser Forster Barca would of won both games at ease. He has just come back from injury on Saturday and looked far from convincing at Inverness so he might not be quite ready for this tie. In addition their win in Moscow came against 10 men and the return game in Glasgow was meaningless for Spartak.

Domestically in their big games Celtic have been poor in the last year. They were beaten in the league cup final by Kilmarnock last March, knocked out of the Scottish Cup by Hearts and beaten by St Mirren in the league cup semi final this year. These are all matches Celtic should be winning and expect to. They also had the opportunity to win the league title at Ibrox last year and failed. So in the big matches they have been very poor and I don’t see their luck holding up against a Juventus side that have been unbeaten away from home in Europe this season. They should have too much quality against a side whose only real star is Wanyama in midfield. I don’t particularly rate Gary Hooper despite the media up here proclaiming him to be a superstar, he’ll score goals in the SPL/Championship but I don’t think he has what it takes to do it at the next level. For that reason I don’t see Juventus being trouble too much and I would expect them to take the chances that will come their way.

Callum, the boy made one mistake, apart from that Celtic are doing OK, just need a bit of quality up front and they’ll get a goal. Could see a sending off the way it’s going too and ref starting to dish out the cards.

Crowman, I have a Lucky Line of the Week and Unlucky Line of the Week contest in the Record. Prize for the best is a £50 correct score single from William Hill and for unlucky it’s a £5 scorecast as a consolation although last season a reader put his fiver on a 340-1 shot and won. Details should be sent to [email protected] by Thursday.

  31. 1plus2 5 years ago

I always wondered Mr F about how you come to pick the unlucky line of the week is it based on how much you were set to win or last min coupon busters regardless of the amount you would get back, or something like a few years back when a divit played a big part in a result i think involving Tim Flowers the Blackburn goalie, or that time when the beachball played a bit part in a liverpool result ?.

Bet someone had a coupon go down because of those freak unlucky moments.

    • Profile photo of Mr Fixit Author
      Mr Fixit 5 years ago

1plus2, there are different criteria and as you say it can be the unluckiest one, not the one that missed the biggesy payout. Someone won a few years ago for a line they didn’t put on. They picked their teams and they all won, should have been over £2k, but they’d filled out a half-time coupon by mistake.
