Real Sociedad vs Paris St-Germain

, KO: 20:00 Mar 5, 2024, Reale Arena
Paris St-Germain

REAL SOCIEDAD will have to defy the form book if they're to overhaul a 2-0 deficit and end Paris St-Germain's hopes of Champions League glory for another season in this last-16 clash.

Imanol Alguacil's side were outgunned in Paris, bringing up both bets for Slips Tips, and that loss to the French champions is part of a dismal run that has seen them win just once in nine games in all competitions.

The latest setback was a 3-2 loss at Sevilla on Saturday and that defeat has left Real Sociedad languishing in seventh place, 15 points off the top four in La Liga.

They only way they can return to Europe's top table next term is to win the Champions League but it would be a surprise if they turned things around against a PSG side in excellent form.

Luis Enrique's men have drawn their last two games in France but are still unbeaten in their last 20 outings since losing to AC Milan in the Champions League group stage back in November.

Paris St-Germain are 11 points clear of second-place Brest in Ligue 1 so they can concentrate on Europe for the rest of the season with another domestic title pretty much in the bag.

For all the money lavished on the squad since the Qatari takeover back in 2012, the best PSG have managed in the Champions League is a runners-up finish to Bayern Munich four years ago.

But having fewer superstar egos in the squad seems to have forged a better team spirit this season and with Kylian Mbappe still around the French champions can beat any side in Europe on their day.

How the bookies view it

Paris St-Germain are red-hot favourites to progress at 1/10 (Ladbrokes) after their emphatic first-leg win while Real Sociedad are as big as 7/1 with Unibet. For a win on the night, the Basque side are 33/20 with BetMGM while Enrique's team are 30/17 at VBet and the draw pays 13/5 with Betfred.

Head to head

That clash in Paris two weeks ago was the first time these sides have faced off in Europe. Real Sociedad have played French teams seven times in total, winning just twice.

Players to watch

Japanese forward Takefusa Kubo should be Real Sociedad's biggest threat and needs just one more goal to take his tally for the season into double figures. He was rested at the weekend but should return here and is 22/5 with BetUK for anytime scorer.

Mbappe was taken off at half-time in PSG's draw with Monaco on Friday and although Enrique insisted it was a tactical move, the striker seemed to be moving a little gingerly. It might be worth steering clear of him in this game in case he isn't risked and youngster Bradley Barcola is a tempting 11/2 with Bet365 to repeat his first-leg goal.

Anything else catch the eye?

Real Sociedad have to go for it so this should be an open game. BTTS is just 4/5 at 888Sport but over 2.5 goals is better at evens with William Hill. Combining both those bets boosts the odds to 5/4 at Coral.

The first leg produced 16 corners so that could be another market worth looking at. Over 11.5 match corners pays 6/5 with BetVictor who also price Sociedad -1 at 37/40 in the same market.

Paris St-Germain midfielder Fabian Ruiz is 17/10 at Paddy Power just to have a shot on target and that could be worth a punt with Real Sociedad leaving gaps at the back.

PSG might end up winning the match. I will risk my money on PSG to get the job done. Secondly I will go for +9.5 corners.
Yesterday was a very sad day for me, sometimes betting on high corner outcome has its own risk.

Yeah, I was burned a couple of weeks ago after a few bets on corners in Scottish games. Teams who regularly hit double figures all came up short on the same day
