World Cup group guide, predictions, and odds

Group J has a clear favourite but the battle behind them looks far tighter. Argentina arrive as defending champions and heavy favourites to top the group, while Austria and Algeria look set for a direct fight over second place and automatic progression.

Jordan enter their first ever World Cup carrying far less expectation but also the freedom that often makes debut sides dangerous. Lionel Messi's likely final World Cup creates another major storyline as Argentina attempt to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to retain the trophy.

There is plenty for bettors to focus on across this group, particularly with Austria and Algeria carrying similar qualification prices and the expanded format increasing the value of every point.

Which teams are in Group J of the 2026 World Cup?

Argentina

Current FIFA ranking: 2

Argentina enter their 19th World Cup as reigning champions following their dramatic victory over France in Qatar in 2022. They have lifted the trophy three times, in 1978, 1986 and 2022, and now attempt to become the first nation in more than 60 years to successfully defend the title.

Their qualifying campaign was dominant. Argentina won 12 of 18 matches and finished nine points clear at the top of the CONMEBOL standings. Lionel Messi finished as top scorer with eight goals while Emiliano Martinez conceded only 10 goals across the campaign.

Recent form has remained strong with further victories in pre tournament friendlies reinforcing the feeling that Argentina remain among the strongest teams arriving in North America.

Manager and tactics

Lionel Scaloni has consistently shown tactical flexibility, switching between 4-3-3, 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1 and 3-5-2 systems throughout qualifying. The 4-3-3 remains the most likely base setup heading into the tournament.

Argentina are at their strongest when winning possession high and attacking quickly before opponents can recover shape. Deep defensive blocks remain one of the few situations where they become less comfortable.

Messi will lead the side in what is likely to be his sixth and final World Cup, supported by Alexis Mac Allister, Rodrigo De Paul, Enzo Fernandez and Julian Alvarez.

Algeria

Current FIFA ranking: 35

Algeria return to the World Cup for the first time since 2014 and make their fifth appearance overall. Their best performance remains the round of 16 finish in Brazil before losing to Germany after extra time.

Their CAF qualifying campaign was dominant. Algeria won eight of 10 matches, scored 24 goals and finished seven points clear at the top of the group. Mohamed Amoura led the way with 10 goals.

Their only defeat arrived against Guinea but they responded strongly and qualification never looked under threat.

Manager and tactics

Vladimir Petkovic took charge in early 2024 and brings extensive tournament experience following spells with Switzerland.

Algeria primarily operated in a 4-1-4-1 system during qualifying but showed greater tactical flexibility in friendlies, using both 4-2-3-1 and 5-4-1 shapes depending on the opposition.

Riyad Mahrez remains central to everything they do while Amoura's scoring record and Amine Gouiri's creativity provide support in attack.

Austria

Current FIFA ranking: 24

Austria return to the World Cup for the first time since 1998, ending a 28 year absence from the competition. Their best performance remains third place in 1954.

Their qualifying campaign was excellent. Austria won six of eight matches and conceded only four goals across the group stage. Marko Arnautovic finished as top scorer with eight goals and recent friendly victories suggest they arrive with strong momentum.

Manager and tactics

Ralf Rangnick has transformed Austria into a high intensity pressing side since taking charge in 2022.

Austria used a 4-2-3-1 system throughout qualification and recent friendlies, built around immediate pressure, quick transitions and disciplined organisation.

Arnautovic remains the focal point while Marcel Sabitzer provides creativity and David Alaba continues to organise the defence.

Jordan

Current FIFA ranking: 66

Jordan make their first ever World Cup appearance and will attempt to become one of the tournament's surprise stories.

They secured qualification after finishing behind South Korea and produced several impressive results along the way, including a decisive 3-0 win over Oman.

Manager and tactics

Jamal Sellami has built a disciplined and organised side around a 3-4-3 structure that provides defensive security and width through the wing backs.

Musa Al Taamari remains the key attacking player while Ali Olwan arrives after scoring nine goals during qualifying.

Group J looks unlikely to be decided early and goal difference may become decisive by the final matchday.
