Best tennis tips and predictions today
Our first bet will take advantage of an interesting situation: former top 100 player Yibing Wu is returning to the courts from injury and is getting really generous odds.
The second one will see us backing yet another Chinese player against a veteran who won’t be easy to beat.
Wu to defeat Wong @ 4/6
Yibing Wu is a solid player who has unfortunately dealt with a couple of big injuries in his career. He was in the top 100 at his peak, and at his best, he's probably a top 30 player.
An injury kept him away from the courts for a very long time, but he’s been improving lately, and the bookies seem a bit skeptical towards him.
He’s getting good value against Wong, who is getting close to the top 100 but likely isn’t on Wu's level yet. Another bonus for this pick is that Wu is literally from the city where the event is being played, so not only is he in China, but he’s also playing in his hometown.
That’s only going to motivate him more, and he’s been playing tennis in China for the past couple of weeks with good results. The conditions and courts should suit him, and we just think that he’s the better player.
He was in the top 100, beating players at the Grand Slam level, which Wong has yet to prove he can do. It might be close, it might go three sets, but overall, we like Wu to win this one.
Shang to defeat Nishikori 2-0 @ 3/2
Let us just preface this by admitting it’s a very risky play, but there is a reason why we’re backing it. Nishikori is coming into this event pretty cold when it comes to hard courts. He did play one match in the Davis Cup on hard courts, but most of his tennis in recent weeks has been on clay.
That match in the Davis Cup wasn’t great for him, even though he won it in two sets. He is, however, a really good hard court player, so for him, it’s like riding a bike. On the other hand, we have a hard court specialist in Jerry Shang, who is very tough to play.
Shang has got some crazy shots and angles in his arsenal, which are difficult to counter. He’s also going to be playing at home, as he is from China, and that should be a great experience for him.
We think that in this spot, Shang is the better player and will be more motivated to get it done. He’s got the game to trouble Nishikori, as the Japanese player will have to move around, which isn’t his strength anymore. Nishikori also doesn’t have the power to really hit through Shang, so we’re backing the Chinese player to win 2-0.
As always, backing 2-0 is risky because tennis sometimes comes down to luck, but we’re confident he will get it done.
