Saturday’s Football Tips: Premier League baptism of fire for Ipswich Town as they face mighty Liverpool on day one

Ipswich Town are back in the big time after a 23-year absence but they have a daunting Premier League opener today as Liverpool come to Portman Road.

Back-to-back promotions have seen Kieran McKenna's side rocket from League One to the top flight and it will be fascinating to see how they cope with the big step up.

A lot of people are saying this might be a good time to play Liverpool with the Anfield giants a club in transition after Jurgen Klopp's departure as manager.

But new gaffer Arne Slot has inherited a settled side that challenged for the title last term and performances have been pretty impressive from the Reds in pre-season.

If Liverpool can silence a raucous home crowd by scoring early then it could be a rude Premier League awakening for McKenna and his players.

Ipswich Town v Liverpool top betting tips

The bookies can't see past a Liverpool win, with Slot's slide 1/3 hot favourites at Betfred and the Tractor Boys as big as 8/1.

Arsenal v Wolverhampton Wanderers top tips

Arsenal took the title race to the final day last term and fans now believe Mikel Arteta's men are ready to topple Manchester City and claim the crown for the first time in over two decades.

The Gunners were so strong at home last term so it's no surprise to see them as 2/11 hot favourites for a win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on day one in the Premier League.

Gary O'Neil's men comfortably finished in mid-table last term after being tipped for a battle against the drop. Their form tailed off after safety was secured though and Wolves claimed just one win in their last 11 games.

It's hard to see them springing a shock at the Emirates and I fancy Bukayo Saka to get off the mark for Arsenal at 5/4.

Five yellows were flashed when these teams last faced off and Mario Lemina looks decent value for a card here at 12/5.

For a long-odds option, Gunners stopper Gabriel is 11/1 to score with a header at Bet365 as his side continue to look a big threat from set-pieces.

Newcastle v Southampton top tips

One of the best games for a neutral to watch today could come at St James' Park as promoted Southampton kick of the Premier League campaign against Newcastle.

Saints boss Russell Martin insists he won't change his style in the top flight and passing out from the back could be dangerous against a Magpies team who will press with plenty of energy.

Over 2.5 Newcastle goals stands a chance at evens while over 3.5 match strikes pays the same price as Betfred.

There's higher odds in backing players for goals and winger Anthony Gordon is 11/8 for anytime scorer.

Rangers v St Johnstone top tips

A dark cloud is hanging over Rangers after their Champions League exit in midweek and fans are reportedly set to stage protests at today's League Cup last-16 clash with St Johnstone.
