West Brom vs Southampton

, KO: 20:00 Feb 16, 2024, The Hawthorns

After losing for the first time since September, Southampton will be targeting a swift return to winning ways as they face West Brom in a Friday night Championship fixture. The Baggies have picked up their form in recent weeks and can hold out for a draw against the Saints.

West Brom are coming off a 2-0 victory over Cardiff City in their previous Championship fixture. They were comfortable for much of the encounter with goals in each half from Michael Johnston and Andreas Weimann earning them the win.

That result means West Brom are now unbeaten in their last three matches, claiming two wins in that run. Carlos Corberan’s men are still in the mix for the promotion playoffs as they sit fifth on the table, four points clear of seventh placed Hull City.

At the heart of West Brom’s recent good form is a solid record at the Hawthorns. They have lost just once in their last 10 Championship matches, claiming eight wins in that run.

Southampton were beaten 3-1 at Bristol City last time out in the Championship as they ended a 35 -match unbeaten run across all competitions. They were not at their best and fell three goals down before Adam Armstrong struck an injury time consolation.

Given Southampton’s lengthy unbeaten run, manager Russell Martin will consider that result a blip and will be keen to make a swift return to wining ways. The good news for the Saints is that the defeat did not affect their position on the standings as they remain third.

Southampton’s unbeaten run also includes a fine record on their travels as Tuesday’s defeat was their first in 13 matches. However, there have been quite a few draws in that run as they have been held six times on the road.

How the bookies view it

Southampton have the edge among the bookies and are priced at 7/5 by Coral to claim the win. A victory for West Brom is valued at 21/10 by William Hill while Paddy Power is offering odds of 5/2 for a draw.

Head to head

Southampton have a 21-16 advantage with 18 draws from 55 previous matches against West Brom. However, the Saints have won six of the last seven meetings and picked up a 2-1 victory in the reverse fixture back in November with Adam Armstrong netting the winner.

Players to watch

Andreas Weimann has caught the eye for West Brom since joining from Bristol City in January. The forward has scored in two of the last three matches and is priced at 7/2 with BetVictor to get on the score sheet.

Southampton may have lost last time out but Adam Armstrong continued his fine campaign by netting his 15th goal of the season. The attacker was also on target in the reverse fixture and is priced at 11/5 by Paddy Power to maintain his scoring run.

Anything else catch the eye?

West Brom and Southampton have plenty of quality in attack and both teams could be backed to score at 8/11 with bet365. The reverse fixture produced over 2.5 goals which is priced at 9/10 by Unibet while over 3.5 goals is valued at 12/5 by bet365.

There were second half goals for both teams in the reverse fixture and Friday’s clash could be tipped to follow a similar pattern at 9/4 with William Hill.
