NEWCASTLE UNITED and Leicester City will lock horns in the last-eight of the EFL Cup at St James’ Park on Tuesday night.
The Magpies will be looking to make amends after being on the wrong end of a huge upset last time out, as they crashed to a 2-1 FA Cup defeat at Sheffield Wednesday.
That setback means Eddie Howe’s side now find themselves without a win in their last three matches across all competitions.
As such, Newcastle will be desperate to reach the semi-final stages of the League Cup for the first time since 1976 with a victory over Leicester this midweek.
The Foxes fared better than their Premier League counterparts in cup competition at the weekend, as Kelechi Iheanacho’s strike was enough to see off League 2 Gillingham.
In doing so, Brendan Rodgers’ side brought a three-game losing run to a halt, a sequence that started with a 3-0 battering from Newcastle on Boxing Day.
Outright Betting
Newcastle United, who have yet to suffer defeat at St James’ Park this season, head into this cup tie as short priced 4/7 (William Hill) favourites.
Leicester City could have a taste for revenge here, however the visitors are the 9/2 (Bet 365) outsiders while the 90 minute draw pays out at 3/1 (Bet 365).
Betting Angles
Here, I think the hosts are if anything a tad short, but merging two Newcastle goals with Newcastle to Qualify will bring about a backable 4/5 (Bet 365) shot.
As already mentioned, St James’ Park has been somewhat of a fortress this season, with the Magpies avoiding defeat in each of their 12 Tyneside tussles in all competitions this term to date.
What’s more, the Toon have hit the back of the net in a sizeable 18 of their overall 21 Premier League home games under Eddie Howe’s tutorship,
Leicester’s away form in contrast, has seen them slump to defeat in six of their nine top-flight road trips this season, conceding multiple goals on each of those six occasions.
It's also worth pointing out that the Foxes have failed to file a clean sheet against Premier League opposition since the World Cup break, including the aforementioned trio of strikes they shipped when playing host to Newcastle over the festive period.
Given that the FA cup represents a terrific opportunity for Newcastle to bring their long wait for silverware to an end, the above-mentioned 4/5 (Bet 365) Bet Builder makes appeal on a night where the Howe’s charges will have a raucous home crowd roaring them on.
Elsewhere, I’ll also dip into the anytime goalscorer market and have a speculative punt on Newcastle defender Dan Burn to score anytime at 18/1 with Betfred.
Given Leicester's well-documented issues when it comes to defending set pieces, the 6 ft 7 Newcastle defender could be worth some interest to grab a goal here at a hefty price.
