THE Netherlands and Turkey will meet at a major tournament for the first time ever when the pair do battle at the quarter-final stage of Euro 2024 at the Olympiastadion on Saturday night.
Ronald Koeman’s side didn’t pull up many trees in Group D when placing third behind both Austria and France.
However, the Oranje did put in an impressive display in the round of 16 with a resounding 3-0 win over Romania, much to the delight of our man Andy Delaney.
Koeman and co will be hoping that confidence-boosting victory will act as a springboard for further success when the Dutch take on Turkey in the German capital.
Merih Demiral struck in each half to send Turkey through to the quarter-final stage at the expense of a much-fancied Austria outfit on Tuesday night.
That triumph means the Crescent Stars have reached the last eight of a European Championships for the first time in 16 years, and they will now aim to repeat their 2008 exploits by securing a semi-final berth in Berlin.
How the bookies view it: Dutch to have too much
Following their 3-0 win over Romania, the Netherlands are firm 4/7 favourites on Betfred to take top honours against Turkey.
Turkey are as big as 9/2 (Betfred) to triumph inside regulation time, while the 90 minute draw at the Olympiastadion can be backed at 16/5 with the same oddsmaker.
Head to head: Oranje on top
Both sides came up against each other during World Cup 2022 qualifying, with Turkey claiming a 4-2 win in Istanbul, while the Dutch gained revenge with a 6-1 crushing of the Crescent Stars in the Amsterdam return match.
The Netherlands have come out on top in six of the overall 14 meetings, losing just four times.
Players to watch: Gakpo hunting Golden Boot
Cody Gakpo’s goal against Romania last time out means he’s now the joint-leader in the race for the Golden Boot award. The in-form Dutchman is 6/4 to strike against Turkey on Saturday night.
Baris Yilmaz has yet to score for Turkey at Euro 2024 but he has hit the target in each of his last three appearances in the tournament. The 24-year old is expected to spearhead Vincenzo Montella’s attack on Saturday night and he stands out for another on-target effort at evens with Betfred.
Predicted line-ups
After coming off the bench to score twice against Romania, Donyell Malen is pushing for a place in the Netherlands starting XI on Saturday night.
Hakan Calhanoglu served a one match suspension for Turkey against Austria last time out and the skipper will almost certainly come back into the starting line-up in Berlin.
Netherlands: Verbruggen; Dumfries, De Vrij, Van Dijk, Ake; Schouten, Reijnders; Malen, Simons, Gakpo; Depay
Turkey: Gunok; Muldur, Demiral, Bardakci, Kadioglu; Ayhan, Yokuslu; Yildiz, Calhanoglu, Yilmaz; Guler
Anything else catch the eye?
Both teams to score would have been the right wager in three of Turkey’s four matches at Euro 2024 so far and the same selection looks worthy of support at 4/5 (Betfred) on Saturday night.
Vincenzo Montella’s men have scored in all bar one of their last 10 meaningful matches, however they have only managed to file three clean sheets across that 10-game stretch, with BTTS banking on six occasions.
What's more, both teams have scored in two of the Netherlands’ four outings at Euro 2024 to date, and that only adds to the appeal of backing each team to oblige at the Olympiastadion.
Betfred boosted odds for Netherlands v Turkey
As we come closer to the start of the game, we are seeing new price boosts on Betfred, so let's check out some of those that are active right now.
The first boosted price is for Netherlands to Win in 90 Minutes & Both Teams to Score, which was 9/4 and now is 5/2. Given that the Dutch are the favourites and that Turkey have scored in three of their four matches so far, we like this bet and the boosted odds.
Then, we have a couple of Anytime Goalscorer markets that were boosted: Mephis Depay went from 6/4 to 7/4, while Arda Guler went from 7/2 to 9/2. Keep in mind that for this market you also win if the player scores a goal in potential extra time.
