After climbing to second in La Liga, Barcelona will be looking to keep hold of their position as they travel to relegation threatened Levante on Sunday. While the hosts have shown some improvement lately, Barcelona are doing much better at the moment and their superior quality should give them the upper hand.
Levante boosted their hopes of survival with a 2-0 victory over Villarreal in their previous La Liga fixture. They laboured in the first half but came to life after the break with Jose Luis Morales netting a brace.
It was a much-needed win for Levante as it ended a run of two defeats and a draw from their previous three matches. The result means Alessio Risci’s men have climbed off the foot of the table and are now three points from safety.
Home form is likely to be pivotal in Levante’s survival push and they are now unbeaten in their last three matches at Ciudad de Valencia. However, they remain vulnerable at the back and have conceded seven goals in their last four La Liga matches.
Given their poor start to the season and where they were at the turn of the year, Barcelona have turned a corner. The Catalans continue to improve under manager Xavi and have won their last six La Liga matches. A 4-0 El Clasico victory is among their results in that run while they also won 1-0 over Sevilla in their previous fixture with Pedri getting the goal.
Barcelona have also impressed on their travels and have won four of their last five away matches. The one blemish is they are not as convincing defensively on the road having kept just one clean sheet in their last four away matches.
How the bookies view it
The bookies have Barcelona as overwhelming favourites at 5/11 with SBK while a victory for Levante is valued at 11/2 by William Hill. SBK is also offering odds of 41/10 for a draw.
Head to head
Barcelona have a 23-3 advantage with five draws from 31 previous matches with Levante. The Catalans have also won three of the last four meetings and triumphed 3-0 in the reverse fixture back in September.
Players to watch
Levante’s recent resurgence has coincided with a return to goalscoring form for Jose Luis Morales. The attacker has three goals in his last two home matches and is priced at 10/3 by Unibet to maintain his scoring form.
Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang failed to score last time out against Sevilla but remains the biggest goal threat for Barcelona. The striker has found the net seven times in eight La Liga appearances for the Catalans and is priced at 41/50 by Unibet to score anytime on Sunday.
Anything else catch the eye?
Levante and Barcelona often enjoy an open style of play and given the attacking quality on display, both teams could be backed to score at 13/19 with SBK. The last two meetings at Ciudad de Valencia have produced over 3.5 goals and a similar outcome is priced at 13/11 with SBK.
Given the minimal odds for a straight Barcelona victory, the Catalans could be tipped to earn a win and over 3.5 goals at 15/8 with Paddy Power.
