GERMANY started their own Euro 2024 party with a swagger and will be out to build more momentum when they face Hungary in the second Group A fixture.
Nobody knew quite what to expect from the hosts after some mixed performances in the build-up to the finals but they were hugely impressive as they swatted aside Scotland 5-1 in Munich.
That game brought up two of Friday's Super Singles and also a bet for our man Mark but it was hard to gauge just how good Julian Nagelsmann's side were given the Scots turned in such a pitiful performance.
This clash with Hungary will give us a better idea if they're genuine contenders for glory this summer and it should be an open game as a Marco Rossi's men need to go for a win.
The Hungarians found themselves 2-0 down to Switzerland at half-time in their opener and although they rallied after the break to pull one back, a blunder at the death saw them lose 3-1.
It was a disappointing performance after playing so well in qualifying and they now face the daunting task of bouncing back against a German side with their tails up.
How the bookies view it: Germans fancied to march on
With Nagelsmann's side so impressive in their opener, it's no surprise to see them as Betfred's 27/100 hot favourites. Hungary are 17/2 outsiders and the draw pays 21/4.
Head to head: Hungary have the edge of late
Hungary have only faced the Germans seven times since the fall of the Berlin Wall led to reunification. Their record is pretty decent too, with two wins, two draws and just three defeats.
The Hungarians are unbeaten in the last three meetings and you have to go back to 2016 for Germany's last win in this fixture.
Last five H2H duels:
- 23/09/2022 (UEFA Nations League) – Germany 0-1 Hungary
- 11/06/2022 (UEFA Nations League) – Hungary 1-1 Germany
- 23/06/2021 (EURO) – Germany 2-2 Hungary
- 04/06/2016 (International Friendly) – Germany 2-0 Hungary
- 29/05/2010 (International Friendly) – Hungary 0-3 Germany
Players to watch: Musiala the magic man
Young guns Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz were Germany's inspiration on day one and both are 7/4 to score for the second game in a row. But the assist market catches my eye more and Musiala looks good value at 3/1 as he can play killer passes.
Barnabas Varga scored Hungary's goal on Saturday to bring up Saturday's Euros Bet of the Day. He will be a pest to the German defence and is 7/2 to either score or assist.
Probable line-ups
Nagelsmann will be tempted to stick with the same line-up but Niclas Fullkrug pressed his claims for a start by scoring off the bench. Robert Andrich is also sweating on a start in midweek after being subbed at half-time in the opener for picking up a needless booking.
Hungary boss Rossi might make a few changes after his side's poor show in their opener.
Germany: Neuer, Kimmich, Tah, Rudiger, Mittelstadt, Kroos, Gross, Musiala, Gündogan, Wirtz, Havertz.
Hungary: Gulacsi; Bola, Orban, Szalai; Nego, A. Nagy, Schafer, Kerkez; Szoboszlai, Sallai; Vargas
Anything else catch the eye?
Switzerland's attack caused Hungary plenty of problems so it's hard to see them keeping the Germans out. Combining a win for the hosts with over 3.5 goals pays 7/4 with Betfred.
A Scotland side down to 10 men and playing poorly still managed to score against the Germans so BTTS looks a little overpriced here at 11/10, especially as Hungary need to go for the win. It's probably safer backing over 2.5 Hungarian efforts on target and that pays evens.
Andras Schafer will be in the midfield battle for Hungary and he looks good at evens to commit over 1.5 fouls.
