Arsenal vs Newcastle

, KO: 20:00 Jan 18, 2021, Emirates Stadium
Newcastle

ARSENAL will be looking to return to winning ways when they entertain Newcastle at the Emirates on Monday night.

Last time out the Gunners saw their three-game winning streak in the Premier League come to end when playing out a drab 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace.

Next up for Mikel Arteta's men is a Monday night meeting with a Newcastle side who have failed to win any of their last eight matches across all competitions.

When digging slightly deeper it can be seen that Toon have been toppled in five of their last six outings, one of which was at this venue in the FA Cup a fortnight ago when Arsenal needed extra-time to see off Newcastle.

Arteta Pressure

The Magpies head into this clash on the back of a 1-0 defeat away at basement boys Sheffield United – that result was the Blades first win of the season at the 18th attempt.

That setback has piled the pressure on Toon boss Steve Bruce who will be hoping he can inspire a response from his troops in North London on Monday night.

Outright Betting

Arsenal have won each of their last eight home matches with Newcastle and the bookies odds suggest that trend is set to continue after pricing the hosts up at 2/5 with William Hill.

Newcastle have lost each of their last three top-flight road trips and that is reflected in the odds with a Toon triumph a towering 7/1  with PaddyPower, while a point apiece is an unfancied 7/2 with the same firm.

Betting Angles

This Monday night match-up pits two of the Premier League's shot-shy sides against each other and I suspect that could lead to a low-scoring affair in North London.

Arsenal are averaging just one goal per game at the Emirates in the Premier League this term, while each of Newcastle's last eight away matches in the league have featured fewer than three strikes.

However, I suspect Arsenal will have enough quality to squeeze out a home success here and with that in mind, I'm going to head to Bet 365's Bet Builder market and combine Arsenal to win, under five match goals and over zero Newcastle cards, an eye-catching even-money shot.

The Arsenal win and under five goal combo has clicked in all seven of the Gunners league wins this season and I'm happy to support the same formula here on a night where Newcastle will almost-certainly look to replicate the defensive blueprint that stifled Liverpool.

Aubameyang

Given that Newcastle are averaging two yellows per game this season I'll also include at least one booking for Bruce's boys in the above-mentioned Bet Builder.

The Magpies have received two or more cards in three of their last four league games and it's also worth noting that Arsenal are drawing two cards per 90 minutes from their opponents this season.

That train of thought coupled with the fact that Davide Coote will officiate this clash may attract punters to the widely available 4/6 for 2+ Newcastle cards on Monday night.

However, that price looks too short to put up so I'll add in at least one Arsenal goal to boost the odds up to 20/23 with Bet 365 – Newcastle have recorded just two clean sheets in their last 16 Premier league outings.
