UNDER fire Arsenal boss Unai Emery will be targeting a much-needed victory at the Emirates against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday night.
The Gunners are winless in their last six matches in all competitions – their last victory was in the Europa League against Vitorai Guimaraes – and another failed attempt here could well tip the capital club into crisis.
However, Arsenal are on the brink of booking their place in the knockout-phase of the Europa League and avoiding defeat in this clash would see the Londoners confirm their place in the last-32 of the competition.
Frankfurt were floored 3-0 by the north London outfit in the reverse fixture, however the Bundesliga side bounced back admirably with back-to-back wins against Vitoria and Standard Liege respectively, before losing the return match against the latter last time out.
Domestically, Die Adler have made a mixed start to their campaign where they currently sit 10th in the German top-flight, however, Adi Hutter's side did recently crush Bayern Munich 5-1 inside the Commerzbank-Arena.
The Germans now look set to battle it out with Standard Liege for second spot in Group F, however, the bookmakers don't believe Frankfurt will pick up any points in the English capital with an away win an unfancied 14/5 (Bet 365) while a point apiece is priced slightly shorter at 13/5 (Bet 365) with the same firm.
An overdue Arsenal success is also odds-against at 21/20 (Betfred) and that can perhaps be attributed to the Gunners wretched run of form, as well as the fact they are without a clean-sheet in eight matches.
Consequently, Unian Emery is under mounting pressure and as such the Spaniard is expected to field a strong side in this Europa League encounter – and that could see Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang lead the line for the Londoners.
The Gabonese goal-getter got among the goals against Frankfurt on matchday one and should Aubameyang be unleashed by Emery against Eintracht again, then the prolific striker looks attractively priced to score anytime at 23/20 (Betway)
Whether or not the Arsenal talisman adds to his goal tally of nine goals in 15 appearances this term remains to be seen, however, I do fancy the home side to hit the back of the net at least twice at 4/5 (Bet 365) – a bet that would have banked profit in eight of the 10 matches played at the Emirates this season to date.
However, given Arsenal's well-documented defensive deficiencies, Eintracht could well get on the scoresheet on Thursday night – the Gunners have shipped seven goals in their last four matches on home turf and with that in mind, I'm not tempted enough to back the hosts to triumph on a night where the atmosphere has the potential to turn toxic.
Therefore goals could be the way to go in London and although there is no value in backing both teams to score at 1/2 (Ladbrokes) or over 2.5 match goals for that matter at 4/7 (Bet 365) , an alternative angle that does appeal is to combine the two aforementioned bets which pays 10/11 (Betfred) – a combination that has landed in 18 of the last 26 matches these two teams have been involved in collectively.
