AC Milan will welcome Liverpool to the San Siro on Tuesday, 17 September as the new-look league phase of the Champions League kicks off.
The match is a repeat of the 2005 and 2007 Champions League finals with Liverpool's win in Istanbul in the former regarded as one of the greatest sporting comebacks of all time.
While the two teams have changed significantly since their two final meetings in the 2000s, this remains a blockbuster European clash between two clubs who have 13 Champions League trophies between them.
How the bookies view it: Liverpool go in as favourites
Despite being the away team, Liverpool are considered the favourites to come out on top on Tuesday night, meaning AC Milan have the novelty of starting a match at the San Siro as the underdogs. Betfred have priced a Liverpool win at 19/20 while a victory for AC Milan has been priced at 13/5. The draw, which would be a good result for both teams, has been priced at 11/4.
Recent head-to-head: Advantage Liverpool
As previously mentioned, Liverpool and AC Milan faced off in two Champions League finals in the 2000s, but they have met on two occasions in the competition since. They were drawn into the same groups in 2021/22 and played out two cracking games at Anfield and the San Siro. Liverpool won both matches, beating AC Milan 3-2 at home before winning 2-1 away.
Players to watch: A last dance for Mo Salah?
A lot has been made about Mo Salah's contract situation at Liverpool with the Egptian now into the final year of his current deal. Salah has been coy on his future but the fact nothing has been agreed yet suggests that there is a good chance he could leave the club on a free transfer next summer.
If Salah does leave Liverpool then it's unlikely that he will play for another European club with a move to Saudi Arabia apparently more likely. If so, this could be the final Champions League season of his dazzling career so every opportunity to see him line up this season should be taken.
Salah's record in the Champions League is excellent with 48 goals in 89 appearances for Liverpool, Basel and Roma. He has started the current season in brilliant form, scoring in three of Liverpool's four Premier League matches so far and he will go into the match on Tuesday looking to smash the 50-goal barrier.
Predicted line-ups
Arne Slot is expected to make changes to the team that lost to Nottingham Forest on Saturday with Cody Gakpo and Curtis Jones pushing for starts. AC Milan are without four first team players for this one with Ismael Bennacer, Alessandro Florenzi, Malick Thiaw and Davide Calabria all ruled out.
AC Milan: Maignan – Emerson, Gabbia, Pavlovic, Hernandez – Fofana, Reijnders, Loftus-Cheek – Pulisic, Abraham, Leao
Liverpool: Alisson – Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson, Gravenberch, Jones, Mac Allister – Salah, Gakpo, Diaz
Anything else catch the eye?
Liverpool's loss to Nottingham Forest was certainly a shock at the weekend but aside from their 3-0 win against Man Utd, the Reds have been a little rigid in attacking positions. AC Milan, meanwhile, kept a clean sheet for the first time this season at the weekend. Liverpool to score under 1.5 goals is priced at 1/1 with Betfred.
